Title: Back from the dead
Post by: Coal85 on July 12, 2013 06:12 pm CDT
Hello everyone,

This is {-o-} Coal from back in the golden age of Tribes.
I talked to Particle about creating some new custom prefabs for PCRPG.
I think he liked some of the ideas I had.
Have built 2 new models for the game, both of which load without crashing tribes / pcrpg map5
Working on the third, need some eyes and ideas for it.
Will have screen shots as soon as I can figure out how to take them in Tribes (only black screen appears).

Lets revive the server.

Nice work, Coal.

Idea: years ago when I was experimenting with prefabbing, I wanted to create a tavern/public house for players. My idea was to make it circular-ish and two stories with a circular staircase going up the wall to the second floor. I couldn't get it to work, though. I think it was too complicated of a shape, and my modeling skills were (and still are) poor. If you have any interest in picking up where I left off, I can see if I still have the files to send your way; or you can start new.

Heck yeah man, you can send me what you have. I can modify that file, or like you said, get an idea of what you want and go from there.
Worldcraft is a tricky beast to master. I find it helpful to work about 30 mins on a project. Then compile it and load it into tribes.
This will insure you don't get too far along with a project and have it be a dud. Also, you can find texture misalignments and fix them on the spot.

Thanks

What version of worldcraft are you using?
Title: Re: Back from the dead
Post by: Coal85 on July 16, 2013 05:41 pm CDT
Worldcraft 3.3

You might want to try 2.1, its older and clunkier but its way less of a hassle when it comes to the compiling. Btw your shapes look good man are you building them all yourself?

Yep, designing them all myself. I still haven't heard any updates from Arf or Particle, but hopefully we can show them of in the server sometime soon. I'd like everyone to get a look at them and provide feedback eventually.
Also, if anyone has any other ideas they would like to see on the server, post them here.

Also, is there any way to host a private, dedicated server and have it register to tribes master servers? or a way to manually connect to a server using a console command?

id like to be able to host a server, have some eyes join up, provide feedback. Update model, rinse and repeat. But have no clue how to go about doing this.

How about a graveyard zone? With zombies.

I feel like a graveyard is too similar to the crypt that we already have.

I don't think it's such a bad idea, maybe make it into an enclosed but open spaces dungeon that you warp into.

Coal, have you delved in to making new models for weapons? i.e. A different model for the Awl Pike vs Spear, or the Claymore vs Bastard Sword vs Anchets Sword vs Gladius vs Broadsword?

As an aside to that, I've noticed that Slashing, and to a lesser extend Piercing and Bludgeoning have gotten special treatments (Anchets Sword + cleave, bashing, backstabbing, respectively), but Archery has, to my knowledge, no special attacks or weapons (unless you count the Aeolus Wing). I'd like to see some more incentive to diversify a player's choice in weapons, especially at the lower RL's. Thoughts?

I dabbled with Milkshape and 3dmax back in the day, but I never successfully loaded a new weapon into the tribes engine.

What's the limit on objects per map? Did we get a workaround on that?

Looks nice, if you guys ever want new character models just ask, I have a few which I can share (scaled rpg players (25%, 400% if I recall), cow, pig, chicken, cat, dog, bat, giant spider, horse)

20+ new furniture prefabs created and ready for use. Also added about 30 new textures to the trpg mod itself. I havn't heard malarkey from particle or Arf. Working through Phantom and his trpg servers to have these shapes added.

A 400% scaled player model would be awesome for an uber-powerful mega boss. Maybe find a cyclops skin for him too?

If you're still working on this, Coal, I think it's time to start adding content to the server's map.  The models look quite good.

Ah ancient brush based tools and creations from the Quake days, how I miss thee. :(

It's the only kind of mapping and modeling I'm familiar with, truth be told.  I used to enjoy making levels for games and game mods, not that I was particularly good at it.  I can remember a few mostly complete CS maps, a handful of Quake 3 maps, and one Sven Coop map in addition to some prefabs I made for the Binker & Newbie's client side TRPG patch they made for their own server in the early 2000s.  The result of that effort is exactly why I have always been so hesitant to go client side over the years--their server lost players after the patch and it never recovered.  These days it's not so much an issue as we don't have many newbies anymore.  Those who want to play here want to play here, and they would know to look for some content.

We also have the option of using the automatic update system I wrote ages ago for this very purpose.  The handful of people who play could be automatically sync'd up.

Particle, as a note if you ever want to use Client::setSkin on an AI it is only a 1 byte change in the tribes.exe file

Address 0xB484
Before: 0xB0
After: 0xF8

Oh also if you want any giant spiders/horses/bats I can give them to you...although they require new PlayerData structures since they are actually new player models
