Title: Tough Riddle...Who can figure it out??
Post by: Pecker on May 30, 2003 03:00 pm CDT
You see before you two doors, one of them leads to freedom, the other to certain death. There is a guard for each door, one of them always lies, the other always tells the truth. You know not which is which. You may ask ONE yes or no question. What question do you ask to discover the door to freedom?

Keep in mind you're trying to find the Door to Freedom, not the liar, and that you don't know if the liar guards the door to Freedom or to Doom.

I don't know the answer, so don't ask, that's what I'm lookin for lol.

Heh, I remember someone asked me this a while back.

You're going to be dissapointed by the answer, I don't exactly remember it, but it was really stupid. =\

Post by: UnderGod on May 30, 2003 03:41 pm CDT
Actually.. the riddle is supposed to be you can ask each guard 1 question..

The answer would be.. You ask one what the other guard would day wich door is not freedom.. Ask the other guard the same question..

The liar would say that the truthfull guard would say that the  non-freedom door

The truthful guy would say it is the non-freedom door.. So you just walk into the opposite door.

Ask him this:  "What will the other guard tell me if I ask him which door leads to freedom?"

Ok, for you to understand this, we will say door A is the one to freedom, and door b is the one to death.

1. if you ask the liar, he'll say door B..  he knows the honest guard is honest and would reply door A,  but he lies because he always tells a lie

2. if you ask the honest person, he'll reply door B (death) since he knows the liar would tell a lie and would reply door B.

SO, you always take the door opposite of whatever the guard says.

No UG, you only need to ask one of them..  they will both always say the same thing, so you only need to ask one :)
Title:
Post by: UnderGod on May 30, 2003 03:45 pm CDT
You're late ;)

No.. You don't know which one is the liar..

So if you ask the liar.. He will tell you that the other guard would pick door b.. You don't know that he is the liar though..
Title:
Post by: LastWish on May 30, 2003 03:47 pm CDT
Actually, I had to figure out the answer because I have never heard that before..  so I clicked post and started writing out ideas till I finally came to that one o_o  Iv'e been sitting here thinking about it for like 30 minutes  >_<

You don't have to know he is the liar, they will both say door b..  read my explanation o_O
Title:
Post by: UnderGod on May 30, 2003 03:47 pm CDT
It doesn't make much of a difference really.

The riddle is ages old..

And the origional had you asking the same question to each one.
Title:
Post by: -RPG-secretagnt on May 30, 2003 03:48 pm CDT
See? Told you it was retarded. =\
Title:
Post by: LastWish on May 30, 2003 03:51 pm CDT
UG, you don't have to know!  You can ask either and they will both reply with the same answer..

IF you ask the liar:  The liar knows that the honest one will say the door to freedom, but he lies to you and says the one to death.

IF you ask the honest one: The honest one KNOWS the liar will tell a lie, so he also tells you the door that leads to death..   they both say the same door!

So naturally, you realize that both of them will answer the same, andyou take the door opposite of whatever the guard you ask tells you.

If the original said you could ask each a question, then it was easier than the current one o_O

mmmm The Labyrinth is such a good movie ;) in the movie at least.
Title:
Post by: LastWish on May 30, 2003 03:57 pm CDT
Yea, but in this situation.. the honest one is being honest still.  Consider the question:

"If I ask the other guard which door leads to freedom, what will he say?"

The honest one knows the other will tell a lie, so he tells him what the guard will say; a lie.

I know the riddle says one yes or no question, so you could ask a guard this:

"If I ask the other guard if this door is the door to freedom, what will he say?"

So both of their answers will be yes or no..  if it is yes then thats not the door to freedom;  if it is no, then that door IS the door to freedom.

Ok take this into consideration:
The Quantum barrier breaks through and you don't know which door is the door that actually leads to the right path.

Read my post, crash..  I posted what the question would be if it had to be yes or no.
Title:
Post by: Jason_Xero on May 30, 2003 04:02 pm CDT
I'd just see what footpath has the most footprints and I would take the opposite one  :)
Title:
Post by: LastWish on May 30, 2003 04:11 pm CDT
Here, i'll rephrase my explaination with the yes or no question instead

You would ask this:

*point to a door* (and lets just say its the door that leads to death) "If I asked the other guard if this was the door that leads to freedom, what would he say?"

So, if by chance you happen to ask the liar, this is what happens.  The liar KNOWS that the other guard (being the truthful one) will say no, but since the liar knows this, he will lie and say yes to you.

If by chance you happen to ask the truthful guard, this is what happens.  The truthful guard KNOWS that the liar would say yes (because he knows he would lie) so the truthful guard has to say yes because he is honest and just answering the question you asked.

With all this in mind, whether you ask the truthful guard or the honest guard, they will both have the same answer.  Therefore,  if the answer is yes, the door you pointed out is NOT the door to freedom.  If the answer is no, the door you pointed out IS the door to freedom.

Understand, kids?  :)

Yep, but my brain was fried after I figured out the answer or better yet me and my friend tried to figure it out. My friend caught on before me but then again I have the brain of a 64mhz machine   :)
Title:

A 64 mHz machine can still do calculations faster than a human could...

You're right, I have a real real real real real slow brain. It works very slow. Imagine trying to open tribes on that machine then you should get a mental picture.

Not true...

A Human COULD process data much faster than any computer ever could..

THat is, if we used 100% of our brain..

I'm not going to get into that now though.
Title:
Post by: Fusor on May 30, 2003 07:45 pm CDT
I don't think any human alive right now can use 100% of their brain  :D

Ozzy uses about 98% of his brain...
Particle uses about 99% of his brain...
EVIL_INC uses about .99% of his brain.

Avrage human uses 16% of there brain and in answer to the riddle... You pull out a gun shoot them both the turn around and go back out where you came from..

Yeah Xiiar, $50 say you would have went through the wrong door then you would have just felt foolish but then again it is a 50/50 chance you could of picked the right door.

Oh and by the way nice signature. You're going to have to tell me that technique on how to make that wallpaper.

If humans could use 100% of their brains, no one would talk..  pure ESP communication.  Wouldn't that be neat?  You could also read peoples minds, and maybe even move things telepathically..

Of course the latter is only myth, but the idea is viable..
Title:
Post by: phox on May 31, 2003 11:25 pm CDT
i hear that telekinesis is possible but it's rare that someone exactually has proof and then when you see proof it turns to be fake. i have somewhat a belief that it's possible that someone could have telekinesis. i might even learn it in my lifetime but what would be some of the things i would do with it. i know i will try to stop bullets like neo did in the matrix. that would be the first thing i would try once i figured out how to use it. that would be so tight to see.

I got this from Lain: Serial Experiment.

At this day of age, everyone is becoming connected through the wired (the internet).  A theory proposed many years ago was that brain waves can act accordingly into a network.  As humans have evolved, our intelligence has grown, and our brains now function very similarly to each other,  in brain waves, that is.  If all brain waves met at a certain frequency, the entire world would be in a network.  The thoughts of one would be the thoughts of many.

Have you ever noticed how identical twins can sometimes communicate with each other without saying anything?  Perhaps their brain waves act similar to this...

*edit*
I need to install a PC card slot into my brain so I can get all these 802.11 networks.

becoming cybrids. i don't think that's too far off. i will give us about 100 to 200 years till we are able to do that. i wouldn't mind being able to download any information. maybe that will come out with a device that will enable people to have absolute memory. i need that badly i can't remember anything for nothing.

Uh, Pat and Leo have mentioned that Nvidia has cheated with their drivers.  They also always tell viewers that ATI has the fastest card whenever somebody asks whether he should buy an nvidia or ati card.

And lets not get into that topic.  We were focusing on telepathic communication etc.

Astral projection is almost a state of mind, well it is a state of mind, really, NOT A GROUP!

Not a group?  How could it possibly be a group o_O

And it's not just a state of mind either, it's an actual plane of existance..  if it were a state of mind, how can I astrally project and see something my friend has written on his dresser, even though I have never seen it in real life?  That's not a state of mind..

Besides, you astrally project every night when you sleep..  its just controlled by your subconscious so you don't remember it every time.

I have weird dreams, but not the weird that you all think.  Like my dream last night was several things, from someone talking about a field of corn and then he said a voice said to him, "you insignificant beings created this?".  And another where I was going to take this girl to the prom and I wasn't ready and I was going to be late and my friend was driving me out to some place so he could get some shoes.  Pretty weird stuff.

The average person has around 300 dreams per night if I remember correctly..

You phase in and out of them within minutes..
Title:
Post by: LastWish on June 5, 2003 12:56 pm CDT
Yea, since your subconscious controls your dreams, anything and everything that happened to you that day or anything you've been thinking about alot lately will most likely show up in your dream in some form or fashion..

It's a very interesting subject, something Iv'e studied a good bit on :)  Especially Astral Projection..  a very very amazing thing!
