Yeah, I'm here.  Hey, you have a kid, and I have this great free program for him.  It's called keyboard pounder.  It will teach him how to point and click and stuff like that.  I've let my sister who is 2 years old play with it for a few months, now she can surf the web.

Dar as i told you on AIM, my son knows how to find his games in favorites. He has his own folder filled with kids games and he goes right to that folder and to whichever one he wants. I sometimes wonder if he can secretly read. lol

A band.

Anyway, yeah, the server crashed and I can't just reset it, being probably a thousand miles away from it.

Then what?  Doug's ICQ nick is IronMaiden, which is also a band.  I just assumed...

Hmm.  Would I be better off not knowing then?

Heh, a friend of mine (who does not play tribes at all) told me that IronMaiden was a band also when I mentioned ironmaiden, who runs the server.  I did an ICQ search for Ironmaiden, well, it seems that there are alot or ironmaiden's lol.

Oh, and Razore, what kind of Ironmaiden were you referring to?

IM doesn't run the server.  All he does is let it run on one of his servers, I take care of it.  (Unless it crashes or something.)  Oh course, that setup is exactly what I was looking for!  Let's give him a round of applause.

Actually there is nothing wrong with having it hosted on another server..

A lot of people are paying to have their servers hosted on his type of setup.. You have it for free.

WHen I get some more money saved up, imma gonna get a few PC's maxed out and a full OC3..

There is a lot of money in that..

Where do you plan to find this few million?
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: UnderGod on January 3, 2003 04:43 am CST
Few million?

OC3's are cheap in Florida.. And Prices on good computer parts are getting cheaper by the day.
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: Particle on January 3, 2003 04:46 am CST
As well as further behind in the industry.

I refuse to believe you can have a full OC3 in California and finance it for a year with less than $750,000.
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: Darwin on January 3, 2003 10:26 am CST
Are OC3's just like the DS3 internet backbones?  Or are they really close?
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: Particle on January 3, 2003 03:46 pm CST
OC's are fiber.  DS's are copper.  OC's handle more data.
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: Darwin on January 3, 2003 06:26 pm CST
I have a really good question, why dont giant corps just keep making more backbone lines? If they did, bandwidth would be more plentiful, and the internet would continue to flourish. Did any of you notice how your bandwidth was significantly less for a few days after MCI shut down? I say that if we have alot of backbones in high populated areas (NYC and CA cities) and at least one backbone in every major city (like Chicago, Memphis, Dallas, etc) everyone would be much happier.

Dont know why I even started talking about that, I just want my DSL modem to reach its maximum download speed of 8mbps.

*edit*
Oh shizzit!  I forgot that a technology park is forming right next to my grandparents house!  Shibby!

There's enough "dark" fiber already layed out to support our needs for probably 5-10 years.  Basically, they've already done what you're asking Dar, they just aren't using it.
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: Darwin on January 3, 2003 08:09 pm CST
Well, why are they holding out on us?  It just doesnt make sense.  The public needs their 2 MB/s downloads and 10 CS pings.

If I become an eccentric billionaire, you can count on me to put an OC3 backbone in your neighborhood.
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: Particle on January 3, 2003 09:00 pm CST
They don't because what it would cost to "light" it outweighs the money they would gain with current demands.

America wants money.  If we were after betterment or something, we'd have internet like Korea or Hong Kong.

damn dude, this is crazy, my bros bandwidth is off the charts and my poor old bandwidth for one of the fastest cable company is only a  small 635 K  :'( :'( :'( my cable is worse than some dial-ups  :'(
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: UnderGod on January 4, 2003 05:47 am CST
With the falling economy my bandwidth keeps getting higher...

I have yet to figure this out.. I have speeds greater than a T1 and I have low class cable... WTF
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: Darwin on January 4, 2003 09:58 am CST
Its all about location.  My dad's DSL line when he first got it only had a downstream speed of 655 kbps.  After a buisiness opened up about a half-mile from our house, our bandwidth shot up to 1.2mbps downstream.
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: Particle on January 4, 2003 10:06 am CST
DSL isn't directly effected like that.  Only if the ISP bought more bandwidth, cleaned up the phone line the business was using (which you may go through), or changed settings/packages then you would be effected.  Take note that DSL does NOT suffer from cable's distribution problem.
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: Darwin on January 4, 2003 10:12 am CST
And that's what makes DSL kick so much more ass than Cable.  Take that you Time Warner Road Runner sons-of-biotches!  Your connection sucks!
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: Dirk on January 4, 2003 04:24 pm CST
In my area, although this isn't true everywhere, to get the same upstream from DSL that I get regularly during peak hours with my cable would cost 90 dollars a month (whereas I pay under 40 after discounts for getting a cable company package).  And that's being under 400ft from the closest CO.

Post by: UnderGod on January 5, 2003 05:21 am CST
WHen I can download 2 mb per second on DSL I'll switch..
Title: Re: Server Down, I'm bored...
Post by: Particle on January 5, 2003 07:23 am CST
You can't DL 2MB/s on cable either.  There isn't 20Mbit/node of bandwidth in the first place.  Closer to about 10.

I used to like cable a few years ago.  I liked it how I was getting near-instant release of fire when sniping on TFC and stuff.  It actually tickled me.  Unfortunately, where I live, the technitians who set it up do a slap-dash job.  Half the people I know who have Time Warner Communications for providing their cable connection lose their connection for an hour or so every now and then when it rains.  Now I'm sure that isnt true for alot of people, but right now I'm steering clear of cable.

Something else I'm wondering.  I think they should create a higher-end connection for the home user.  Now, I know that DSL and Cable (which averages at $45 a month) is what we could call high end, but what about those who want to get say 200-250kb/s downloads and 10-35 pings?  It would be like the gamers-choice for broadband gaming.  Probably perhaps maybe a $60-$75 a month connection fee?

You mention ping times like they're sold out. That is incorrect. It soley depends on the distance from your CO. After that, it's all fibre optics, which runs at about 66% the speed of light, which is some insanly fast millisecond time, not sure. But my point is, the main thing in latency is from you to your CO.

As far as this whole downloading issue, all I have to say is they don't want to lease out all that speed, becase they know that if a certain amount get on at once, and start downloading at max speed, pretty soon the COs would reach max capacity and everyone will suffer. So I say keep the speeds the way they are until COs have sufficent bandwidth for them. Reminds me of AOL and what they did.

*EDIT* http://rescomp.stanford.edu/~cheshire/r ... tency.html (http://rescomp.stanford.edu/~cheshire/rants/Latency.html)
Darwin I suggest you read this if you want more insight.  It is a bit old, but they are facts.

Post by: Particle on January 5, 2003 12:25 pm CST
If you want lower pings, get SDSL. Gamers favor that over anything else at the moment.

You do realize that ping does not lower with raw bandwidth, right? If you had a two gigabit connection (both ways) with your ISP and them to their source, you would not be able to play games with a ping like that of a small network or a lot lower that what you get now even. What matters most is what lies between you and the destination. If a game only uses up to 8KB/s of bandwidth, it does not help to have 300KB/s over 150KB/s of bandwidth at your disposal (assume synchronous connections). It is true that ping increases as more of your bandwidth is used, but what we have right now isn't bad at all. If you can't wait 40ms for data from your machine to get to the server and the server to send data back (yes, that's 40ms for a round trip--that's a "ping") then you really have some sort of deficiency. The typical human doesn't even react to a scene in that time. Thanks to the wonderful client/server models used in games like Half-Life though, low ping people have a serious advantage due to position history inaccuracies which allow lower-ping players to hit laggers, but rarely the other way around.

Well if you are looking for a really high end connection... I know this guy, who works for a company that installs t1 and t3 s for local government agencies, that once told me he could get me a completely connected t1 including equipment rental for around 2000 a month.  But that was almost a year ago now... so there's probably been a noticable price change.

Or get 1.5Mbit SDSL (T1 equiv) for about $350/mo.
