The <forums.pcrpg.org> never worked for me, but everything else has been fine.

Why is it neccessary to type in (www.) before a website when on an intranet?
-
It's just always been like that..
-
Yea I have the same problem as Razore and Darwin.. It's down a lot of the time for me
-
When I try and get on to these forums through my AOL account it said I am banned, if I use IE it worked fine...Dunno why. Maybe something to look into?

The site was down for a time this afternoon, but besides that I rarely see it down.

Why is it neccessary to type in (www.) before a website when on an intranet?
Unless you were just kidding, the answer is that an intranet accesses items on the corporate network with the option of accessing the internet (if it has connection to the internet) where as a strictly internet connection will usually auto-direct to the right website with out the www. It depends on how the intranet is set up for your business... at least, this is how the IIS book I have from 2 years a go dictates it.
Anyhow...
To answer the main question (why is the website sometimes down?):
The reason why it sometimes doesn't load is because either your intranet runs through a server (or 2 or 3 or 4 etc..) which process the data as it's being sent and recieved and then sends it to the specific machine you're using. If you're using terminal based systems, like the hospital I work at, then you're more likely to run into delays which result in the "cannot connect" message, or network data collisions which result in the errors you described. Network collision is a normal thing and happens on all networks, even the internet. It usually shows up on a single home users machine as lag or a webpage timeout. If you're on a large company intranet, you're likely to have more network collision with more people all trying to use the system at the same time, and not having enough servers or routers to handle all of the requests.
I hope that helped a little. I got most of this information from the IIS book, a router manual and from a website I looked at a while back but no longer have the link to.
SoooOO!...... if you're accessing from an intranet (like I do sometimes) it's more likely to timeout or not connect during higher traffic times, and you can usually just hit "<ctrl> r" to refresh the page in a few seconds... possibly requiring a few refreshes.
Alllso, it could be the site you're trying to view getting too much information to process, but that is a lot less likely. :-)

After doing numerous amounts of tests with several people, I have come to the conclusion that it is not the web site.
The errors everyone seems to be getting are DNS errors. It is however, not just on this web site.
Based on theory and evidence.. I believe there is a new virus that quite a few of us are getting..
-
Well, I don't get any errors from my home computer at all. :-)
-
Oh, but you will
Man, you are like a textbook dude... So, can I buy your cliffnotes?
I was accessing these forums in my VB class earlier today, and was wondering about it...
-
Just a bit more on the specifics of a domain:
When you buy a domain, you're buying just blah.suffix. You don't have to run a web server (www). If you wanted to run just an ftp server (ftp), you'd have no http://www.blah.suffix (http://www.blah.suffix). The prefixes just serve to redirect to the different services that you offer on your domain. Not all websites will redirect blah.suffix to http://www.blah.suffix (http://www.blah.suffix), though most do. Not specifying a prefix a sloppy habit that's becoming more and more common.

Maybe Particle banned AOL users =P
Nah, I used to have AOL, I hated it.
When I finally got Cable I murdered all my AOL discs.
-
Anytime I see an AOL disc I murder it, whether it be one of those big giant revolving ones that probably have about 10,000 CDs. That is when you know this world has gone to malarkey.
-
Yeah. When I see stores with free AOL cds for grabs, I always take a few and use them for weapons/frisbees.
Such a waste of a CD...

I thought I was the only one o.O
-
Last year, one of my buddies had one or two hundred of those CD's in his locker. Literally. His entire top shelf was taken up with those things. Everyone would always grab a few and chuck them around for the day. It got so bad that the principal started issuing threats of suspension if he caught anyone throwing them. I swear, it was the latest fad.
-
Think of it as some sort of free disc launcher ammo, folks.
-
I think of it as time to use the best internet service and program around. =\
-
"Welcome to the world-wide-wow!"
-
What I like the most about their new spam 'real' mail, is they come in these big plastic DVD like boxes. I love it, you can just take the cover out and use it as a big safe CD holder. Or if you are into the whole "backing up of DVDs", throw em in there.
*note I just got one today
-
I used to make stuff in art class from peices of AOL CD's. One time me and my group made a really cool collage.
-

haha... we should paint stacks of them blue and leave them lying around in ammo boxes ;-D
//What's with the heartogram Darwin? Isn't that... Him? Some of their stuff's good.
-
The site go down from time to time for me as well.
Dragus, Draak

Haha! I used to do that, too--they have those little "Try AOL Free!" things with like 60 CDs in it, I always took like 15 when I was leaving the store. Then we would all get.. wasted.. and throw AOL cds.. *sigh* I just realized how pathetic I used to be =x
Anyways...
