Title: Rules regarding being AFK.

I was just wondering, what are the exact rules about being AFK in the PCRPG server? I know the rules page states:

AFK Training. You are allowed to AFK train to an extent, but be aware that you are fair game (without penalty) to anybody that wants to do anything to you. Everything goes if you are AFK training.

However, it's a little vague. To what extent, exactly?

The reason I ask is that a friend of mine (db) was jailed for 24 hours, due to his being AFK at the time. However, I have observed dozens of other people being AFK - sometimes for several hours - and no action at all was taken against them. Apparently there are allowed ways to be AFK, and prohibited ways to be AFK. I'd very much like to avoid doing the latter.

Any help and/or more specific information about the AFK rule would be greatly appreciated....

Post by: -eViL- on December 2, 2003 04:19 pm CST: AFK = A FREE KILL. anything goes, your problem. if your friend was afk, its his fault. the extent to afk is about 10 seconds.

The really funny part is that - since he only serves time towards his 24 hour sentence while he's in the server - he would actually have to be AFK for many, many hours in order to serve his time for being AFK in the first place.

Post by: Particle on December 2, 2003 05:30 pm CST: I don't know who would have jailed you for being AFK, *looks at UG* but please keep in mind that while AFK, no rules short of the hacking/exploit rules apply to you at that point. AFK training to an extent means that if it annoys me that you've been training while AFK then I reserve the right to do whatever. Basically, AFK train all you want--just don't let it become a problem.

Oh, and I "wouldn't" do something like that anyway.. That is Unless they were afk leveling.

Acceptable? If your being AFK wasn't in some way hurting the server or the non-AFK players, you shouldn't have been jailed.

Post by: Taurik on December 4, 2003 10:08 am CST: Sigh. It happened again... this time he jailed us both, me apparently for "9999 seconds". He also transported a Cent into the cell and of course it killed me. That I don't really have a problem with, I don't care who kills me or how...

It's just more than a little annoying now that I cannot talk globally or cast any spells.

Post by: Taurik on December 5, 2003 05:50 am CST: UG - I have, in a way. I've altered the AFK script so that it will disconnect me from the server if Xanth connects. I can have my AFK-ness when he's not around, and when he is around, he doesn't have to sit there fuming about AFKers. I'll give db the updated version too.

Post by: Taurik on December 5, 2003 03:18 pm CST: UG - I don't recall asking for your suggestion, but my reply is this: If I knew whether or not I would be gone for more than 2 "hour" at a time, none of this would be an issue. The fact is, unless I'm AFK doing something quick (like feeding the cat, or answering moronic forum suggestions) then I have absolutely no idea how long it's going to take. Sorry. It could be 2 minutes....... it could be 5 hours; such is life.

eViL - I never said I planned to break the rules. Being AFK, in itself, is perfectly fine!!.... as long as you are not interfering with other players in your AFK state. Since, if I know I'm going to leave the comp, I usually find a nice out-of-the-way spot... NOT in anyone's way... it CANNOT be said that I am "interfering" with ANYONE. kthx.

Silvanoshei - Thanks for the well thought out comments. In reality, I only go afk for long periods of time AT NIGHT, when a maximum of 6 people are on the server. I am hardly preventing anyone from playing. And if you're so concerned about the average 3 kB/sec of bandwidth a typical player uses, it begs the question: Why are you running a server in the first place? It's like owning a pet when you can't afford a vet when he gets ill. Besides, last I heard, Particle's l33t server has no monthly upload/download limits, so this whole thing is moot...

I have yet to see the server suddenly FILL UP at 3:00am after having been almost dead empty, and I've been playing for a month. It's reasonable to assume it will Never happen, unless people start taking MDMA every few days and can't sleep anymore.

....And if it's REALLY that MUCH of a concern, I'm sure it would be a simple matter to edit my script so it would automatically disconnect me from the server once the last client slot has been filled.... not that it would ever get a chance to, but it would be insurance against whiners, eh?

we have played (or managed in particle's case) the server for a hell of a lot longer than you have been around and we know what can happen. Back when i played, the server would be at 25+ players damn near constantly EVEN AT 3:00 IN THE MORNING. Just because you and your lil unsavory woman ass hasn't been around long enough to see that, doesn't mean you have the right to make a huge assumption.

I think it is soo funny that evil think he is an admin. You DON'T own the server evil, You're nothing. Stop scarring noobs into thinking you are admin.

As for suggestions.. Those weren't suggestions..

Those were orders. You follow them or you won't be able to afk train at all. And trust me, Your scripts mean nothing. You don't have to be on the server to be punished.

It was his way of getting to me in order to kill me. The second time I was AFK, I was in a very hard to reach area... nothing short of jailing me (to take me to Fort Ethren) would have worked anyway, I guess. This, I don't care about.

The only thing that irritated me was he'd forget to unconfine me when he was done. That's why I posted here in the first place.

In any case, since I'm not there to irritate him anymore, he has no reason to get to me to kill me... by jailing or any other means.

...As for your orders... until I see it on the Rules page, which I just checked again right now to be sure, it's just something someone said on a forum (I don't even know who you are!) ...And it IS a suggestion, because there are other people who AFK train on the server for hours at a time, and they have no idea that this discussion is even happening.

So, in summary, a rule is always well-known by everyone and well-enforced by the admins, whereas a suggestion is something one person says to one other person in an out-of-the-way place, like a forum. After tomorrow's lesson there will be a quiz.

Test this: step into the server and go afk, and then let ozzy come into the server. i am sure you will find that what xanth is doing to you is much better off than what ozzy will do to you. Guaranteed.

i have seen ozzy strip people of all their malarkey because they were afk. i have seen ozzy do completely off the wall malarkey to them as well (ie- taking them back to level 1 and stripping them of all their skills), and jailing would be a hell of a lot better punishment than what ozzy would do to you.

Ozzy doesn't like afk'ers. Neither does the rest of the server, no matter where you are.

Post by: Whitby on December 7, 2003 11:55 am CST: Admins have lost admin status before in particles server. Xanth Jails people he doesn't like and puts a BOT in with them and it kills them. Taurik Xanth jailed me a few days ago and i got your pack, it had your shield. armor and a few weapons.
