Just so you know, a dab the size of a grain of rice is the ideal amount of thermal compound between a processor and a heatsink.

Yeah, your onboard LAN will take care of your need.

...unless you plan on using dialup for something that is

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Modems are so worthless that people don't even make porn dialer viruses anymore.

I'd rather do a VPN to a friend's house for WoW than use dialup for everything.

I'm having a terrible time. I have all the boards, drives, and such physically installed--that is, in the right places--but the cable connections are giving me hell. The labeling doesn't seem to be consistent between my mobo, case, and power supply instructions. My dad and I are going to the university tomorrow and he said maybe I could take it to the Information Technology Assistance Center (ITAC). After I get all the wiring finished, maybe I can finally see if I've shorted anything out on the motherboard!

If you want to wait until saturday, I can do it for you and make sure it's done right.  I'd rather do it myself than pot luck a student in ITAC to know what he's doing.

Particle, I'll let you handle it, then. Guess I'll use my trusty ol' "Crapple" until the monster's up and running.

Darwin, my dad had had that thought, but I never got to doing it, and it would have been more trouble than it would have been worth, methinks.

I'm leaving my TV at home, Particle, and I've been thinking seriously about abstaining from my "loftiness". Looks like my side of the room will look similar to yours this time.

Oh, and sorry to bother everyone again, but my dad is browsing the market for a tablet PC as a desktop replacement / primary computer (he's a senior at the same university). He knows less about hardware than I do and he won't be using it for anything atypical (other than taking notes with a stylus). Here's the model he's been looking at:

http://http://www.gateway.com/products/gconfig/proddetails.asp?seg=ed&system_id=m285ebp

He had me select some of the higher end stuff and refrain from selecting many of the extras. The total came to $3075.

The computer I'm on currently (mine, BTW) has been his primary one for the last two or three years. Not sure why he wants another to be his primary... maybe so I can have mine back (now that it's all screwed up, thanks to him, methinks) without having to worry about his situation. Anyway, he's a history student who's also taking French, so I don't see him doing much more than using Office apps, handwriting notes, and browsing Al Gore's wonderful internet. Since I'm about to be off to college again (yay for being away from the house!) and HE's the one shopping, I'll see if I can persuade him to get on here, go other places, etc., just so he doesn't keep depending on ME to make recommendations (that I'm not qualified to make) and get more expertly advice. Of course, he doesn't seem to see the value of online forums, so... Aw, hell! Whatever happens happens!

Time for me to start packing!

If he's interested in a gateway, he should consider buying it through my brother.  He's an official vendor based out of Salina.  I can give you his number if your dad would like to talk to him.
