Title: *sigh* Video Card!
Post by: UnderGod on March 3, 2003 03:46 pm CST
I had $100 in gift cerfiticates at Best Buy.. I just got NWN and realized that well It doesn't like 3dFX...

SO I decided to go out and buy a GF4 MX 64DDR for $79 (online price)

I went out to buy it.. I was looking all over, and all I seen was the reg 64 SD which wouldn't be better enough than my VD to waste the gift cards..

I ask the guy about the card and he pointed out an Avalanch GF4 MX440 64 DDR.. It said exactly that on the box, and it was $99 so I figured what the hell..

I take it home, it is a forking accelerator.. (I would have known because it said MMX440-SE, but I wasn't looking at each card to see what is what)

So now I am thinking well wtf.. Why not just get spend $130 of my own including the return price on the MX440 and get a damn ti (I forget the number) 128DDR...

Hell I won't need another card for around 5 years..

You are dumb. Take back anything you bought that says nVidia on it.

I would have gone with the ATi Radeon 9500 Pro, with that 100 gift certificate, it would only be 120$.  Much better than all that crap.  It's comparable to a GF4 Ti4600 in performance.

Or if you are that cheap, get a Radeon 9000 Pro, only 20$ after your gift certificate.

I would never put anything before a gforce...

Exactly.  Nvidia's GeForce3 technology completely changed the way we play games today.  Goooo nVidia!

Hell, I have just even begun to consider buying NWN Razore.  Oh, and if you are saying that a GeForce3 ti500 is more powerful than a Geforce4, you are wrong.  Well, unless you are referring to a GF4 MX.  Those things are for casual to mid range gamers.  Im all the way with Nvidia!  Goooo GeForce FX!

That only applies for the MX brand.  Nothing else.

-2 Vertex Shaders (GeForce3 has only 1)
-LMA2 - enhances the GeForce4's use of available bandwidth
-Faster core and memory clock speeds, leading to larger fill rates, more
vertex processing power, and greater memory bandwidth
-Accuview AA - improves anti-aliasing
-nfiniteFX2 - improves vertex and pixel processing, giving the GeForce4 up to 3 times the vertex power of the GeForce3
-nView - nVidias multi-display support, allowing several devices to be connected at once, including CRT (VGA), DVI, and TV out. No previous nVidia card has had such advanced multiple-display support.

VERY nice card part. I myself have a Ge Force 4 MX 440 64meg DDR SE. Its very good. I might be changing to a Ti 4600 or maybe even the new Ti 4800. But thats after i get my new 2 gig DDR nvidia motherboard. (good to work in a computer shop). but Ozzy Nwn is a great game. i only played for like 2 hours cause i found it realy hard. But the Ge Force 4 440 is a good card. Make sure you dont get the MX 400 or MX 420 cause they are only SD and score 1000 less in 3D mark 2001 SE. For $10 u can add 1000 score...nice ;)

I also own a GeForce3 ti500.  Its a very dependable card, though I have noticed some slowdowns in some games.  But that was only before i formatted my PC.  That comp was running windoze ME, and no telling how many pr0n viruses were on it.

I freakin swear man.  I reformatted my pc a week and a half ago, and its running like a turd again.  I think I'm gonna have to get me an external hard drive to back up all my important files and format once a week.

i used to do that with an internal one...
then i said fork it

now the hard drive stopped working (the primary) in my good comp

I ended up buying a GF4 Ti4600 AGP 8X (best damn card on the market)

I actually bought the 4200, but there was a 4600 inside (it was unopened)

I said SWEET!!!

Anyway..

NWN is a badass game.. You guys probably don't know the whole point of NWN if you are talking about it like that.. It has nothing to do with single player, and Choas.. You have no clue what you are talking about..

NWN is AD&D (2nd phase) For the PC.. You can be a GM and create your own world where your HD size is the limit..

By doing this you can have friends make a party and play... It is a great game..

UG you're such an idiot.  The Radeon 9700 Pro is the best card on the market with far more features.  That card that you got is probably a different reversion and they were wanting to get rid of the old and outdated boards.  So I wouldn't be surprised to hear that you have to take it back because it "went bad".
Title:
Post by: UnderGod on March 4, 2003 09:39 pm CST
If you read what I said, I said I didn't have to take it back.. And no..

Your card will die much faster than mine, and that is a guarantee..

If you go with ATI you are saying yes to poor driver support.  Nvidia on the other hand not only makes more revisions to their drivers, they also don't make poor revisions like every ATI card I've used.

Nvidiots.

You can keep throwing funny words like that out all day, and it won't change the fact that althouh the raedon 9700 pro does have the higher benchmarks in most tests, the drivers for ATI have always been completely unstable with some games and down right dirty when it comes to playing nice with other devices.

Their all in wonder is nice, if you don't have any high graphics demands.

In conjunction with my last post...

Well, looks like you have to play your games in 1024x768 with no Anti-Aliasing and Anistropic Filtering because it will bog it down so much it would be like runing your old video card.  On the other hand, you have a card whose drivers are so optimized that AA barely shaves bandwidth off it.  Reminds me of the 3dfx war in the past, but guess what, not only is ATi's card clearly faster without AA, but even with it turned to the max and compared to 2XAA, it's still faster.  I find that odd since you would think that Nvidia would optimize their drivers better for AA since they bought 3dfx.

Just because ATi has had a bad past with drivers doesn't mean they haven't improved.  That is just being stubborn.  The next video card you will likey get is Nvidia, and I say that because that is all you look for, nothing else.  And if you know anything, the Catalyst 3.1 drivers are the most stable and highest performing drivers for ATi cards.  To tell you the truth, this was my very first ATi card, and I was very pleased.  In doing so, I bought an All-in-Wonder 8500 for my other computer.  I used to have a Geforce 3 Ti500, and when I couldn't play BF1942 because it would run like crap, I truely upgraded, not bought a card that had higher clock speeds and one or two more "advances" on it.

And I used to be an Nvidiot like you guys, back when the Geforce 2 GTS was up against the Voodoo 4 and 5 generation.  I defended Nvidia, of course, like an nvidiot, but I failed to realize that 3dfx did have a decent card.  You guys, just see ATi as nothing, and totally based upon a few websites that gave the first Radeons a bad name.

Do this: find how ever many reviews there are for the Radeon 9700 Pro compared to the GeForce 4 Ti 4600 (or whatever you want), and you will see that 99.9% of them chose the 9700 Pro because of performance.  You will also see that the 9700 Pro still runs better with Anti-Aliasing and Anistropic Filtering at max, with a less percentage lost.  That clearly points to the drivers for that one.

Quote from: "Dirk"
the drivers for ATI have always been completely unstable with some games and down right dirty when it comes to playing nice with other devices.

Based on? You could say that about anything, most importantly is what motherboard did you test this with?

To finish this off, I've never had a game that CAN NOT run or CRASHES on my Radeon 9700 Pro.  However, I do enjoy the fastest video card that has ever been released.

BF1942 ran like crap for you with a ti500?  If this is true, this must have been your own fault.  I own a ti500, and BF1942 runs fine for me.  The only thing that annoys me about that game is the horrible netcode that EA released with that game.
Title:
Post by: Jason_Xero on March 5, 2003 01:09 pm CST
You have to get used to the netcode.  As far as performance, yes, I was sick of the glitching and bogging down.  Get in a tank fight, it bogs down, even on a good system (XP 2200 512 DDR).  Don't you find it funny that all I upgraded was the video card and amazingly it runs smooth the whole time?  I think the reason why you can't tell is that you're used to consoles, and the way they bog down like that.

Same thing with the Serious Sam products.

Havent played my Xbox for 3 weeks.  I dont really notice any bogging down.  Is there a console command to show fps?

Also, explain this to me Jason http://www.dslreports.com/speedtests/34 ... 1046884018 (http://www.dslreports.com/speedtests/347045;1528273;67b68086bf58c7d08464a319ff91a989;2.0;www.dslreports.com/1046884018)

Jason, I played Morrowind T2 Medal of Honor and a malarkey load of games that require high graphics on max, and I had no slowdowns at all on 1024x768(all my current moniter will handle, my other one b0rked)

I get the max fps on all of these games..

This includes anti-aliasing and all that other bs.. so your long post proved nothing..

There isn't a game out that my card can't beat wait not just beat, own....

Post by: Darwin on March 5, 2003 04:25 pm CST
Morrowind was the only game that I had major slowdowns in.  Of course, that was a warez copy (hey, i own the xbox version, so its a backup) and my computer was bogged down with all this ME junk and pr0n viruses, but still, those pixel shading effecs took a toll on my fps in that game.

*edit*
Oh, and Neoz, stfu.
