Title: Music Remixing
Post by: KoRo on August 2, 2007 04:58 am CDT
I've been taking a course on Commercial Music Production over the summer. Over the last few weeks we (finally) got in to mixing, mastering, and effects processing. While there's nothing so grandiose here, I've decided to take what I've learned and try to apply it to PCRPG.

I haven't done much, tbh. The only thing i've done is gone through some of the in-game music (which only about 2% of the players listen to) and remastered it. For one, I took out all of the background noise, such as the fuzz, in the songs. Unfortunately, that also took out some of the timbre from the song, so I tried to compensate using equilization.

Here (http://http://media.putfile.com/PCRPG-Remixing-Sample)'s a sample of what I have done, using the Keldrin Music. I made this track into a before/after so you can hear the difference. The first 10 seconds is before, and the latter 10 seconds is a continuation of the song, but remixed.

By no means is this a final version. Besides, I'm still just a student at it.

Considering how tricky noise removal is, I'd say you did an excellent job.

Nice. Now do it again, in techno!

Hahaa thanks. What I forgot to do was convert it BACK to the original 8-bit mono format that the original piece was in. So I ran a test and did it today, and unfortunately some of the hiss and noise came back.

Would it be possible to encode the mod to read either a higher bitrate of wav files or possibly mp3/ogg files?

Nope.  You'd have to modify Tribes itself--not the scripts.

Crap. Oh well, I'll see what else I can do.

I think someone has made tribes read .mp3s, I'll look into it. What programs are you using to do this?

I use Audacity and Gold Wave studio for the cleaning and cutting. I've yet to be able to produce though, and that's what I would really like to do.

heh.. I don't know if they're still on my site (doubt it) but I edited out all the "pop" sounds from the trpg files that had them and uploaded a fixed pack of sounds.. though I don't know if any one ever used them.
;-p
