Peltier Results?
« on: July 27, 2004 01:33 pm CDT »
So how did the Peltier device work for your test setup Particle?

I have been wondering for quite some time, and it was why I had been logging in for about the past month, but I would forget before posting it as I would get side tracked by an other post first.

I'm considering using your idea... if it worked!
Peace.

Particle was still setting up the test machine with the insulation, foam, conductive materials, and heat sinks.

If you're wondering about Peltier devices... see this link:

I need a larger peltier device.  I was going to order a 320w peltier for some extreme testing madness, but I've got to wait a couple months.

The 40w peltier that I had ran the Pentium and K6-2 at default speeds at around 80F.  The first board I setup to run with a peltier maxed at 300-some odd MHz, so I had to get a newer mobo.  Unfortunately, it maxes at 550MHz (default speed of the K6-2).  I'll try it again with the Pentium 1 CPU in a couple months when I get that 320w unit.  I'm betting it'll hit about 400 and maybe higher if the temps are low enough.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Wow... those are some very decent results at the consideration of the limiting factors.

I was thinking of beefing up my dads old IMB POS with a custom cooling system like your example, and add a faster hard drive in there too.

Peltiers seem to cost quite a bit though, so I will be waiting until next summer probably.

Thanks for the results! :-)

The bare peltiers are cheap:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... eName=WDVW

The money needed to cool the hot side is what'll get you.  Everything else is pretty inexpensive...overall.

1)  Thermal compound - $2-3
2)  Heatsink - $20-25
3)  Peltier - $20-40
4)  Block - $3-5
5)  Screws - $1
6)  100% Silicone - $3
7)  Hotglue - $1
8)  PSU - Varies.

That's about all you need for an air cooled peltier sysytem.

This thermal grease looks pretty neato:
http://www.hi-z.com/websit40.htm

45$ for 20 oz... and it's supposed to go up to 250 C!

I suppose e-bay is in order for searching.
:-)

Thanks again Particle... very interesting stuff!
