More Folding...
« on: September 11, 2004 12:47 am CDT »
It seems like our production is down.  The race was neck-and-neck for awhile between Me, Sleeprae, and Particle, but now it seems like they've nearly ceased producing anything.

sounds good, i'll join, but my question is, i want to run one and forget about it. Which one should i get? and how much drain is this program really going to cause?

Don't you make computers? You should slap some parts around your house together and dedicate a machine to it.

I dont make computers, i run the web design department of a company that repairs/builds new comptuers, but i do have access to quite a few i could work for the project. However currently im feeling extremely lazy, hence my questions about how it works. (dunno why, excessive lazyness attack)

I barely mustered the energy to reply bleh.

Heres the deal with folding@home, as I see it.

Whichever processor you are using, it will immediately pull back production in order to let you use your programs.  It will only use spare clock cycles, and have no performance impact whatsoever.  A graph I saw showed that it didnt  affect 3DMark03 scores at all.

Now...
On a P4 processor with HT, it doesnt even feel like the program is there, since it will only use 50% cpu while still having same output as an AMD of similar value.

On AMD processors, I would notice a slight hang when beginning to use my computer since it would be using 100% before noticing I was trying to do something.  No performance impact in the programs, just a slight hang while opening the programs sometimes.

Athlon XP-M 2600+ here @ 2.61GHz.  No noticable impact during use while folding is running.  Always gives up the CPU cycles to other processes when needed.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.
