This topic is misplaced, obviously belongs in the "what makes you a geek?" thread.

Had to pay a 3 month subscription to transgaming to get the tools to get it running.  Not a bad deal, linux compatibility for alot of windows apps for $15.

Is it worth the hassle for Linux? Serious question; I just don't see it. I'm still running Windows 98SE and I'm completely satisfied.

You could just as easily have used CVS Cedega, the free way to get "WineX".  It supports Tribes, Steam, etc. and costs nothing.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Yes, it should.  If you need instructions for installing Cedega itself using CVS, you can utilize this guide and skip doom 3 instructions:

I used 98 for a while, and switched to 2000 pro, and it gives me no trouble at all.  98 was a little buggy for me, but it wasn't 98 SE.

Would this apply to getting this stuff running properly Particle?
http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/wfs ... ticleid=45

Also, do you have any links to the Linux Distro and Packages which would be needed to make Tribes/Steam run as you say from scratch?

A list would be very helpful... as I don't have much time to learn Linux stuff; the time I do have I spend goofing off to clear my head.
:-)

Thank you very much for your help so far and in the future.

This process is actually really easy.  You shouldnt have any difficulty.

Ok, lets see.

My linux distro is Suse 9.2.  What I did was download the mini-installation (which is about 64 megs or so) and burned it to a cd.

1. Once you have the cd burned, boot from it. When you get the welcome screen, choose ‘installation’

2. It will then show ‘initialising hardware’

3. Next it says ‘make sure cd is in drive’. Press OK

4. Then it will say’ could not find Suse cd-activating setup’ Press OK

5. Select language and keyboard settings

6. You will get to the main menu. Now choose ‘kernel modules’ .Here you need to know the make/model of your NIC (network interface card) card , or more commonly the driver for the RJ45 port on your motherboard, so that you can load the appropriate module for the ftp install.  I think my computer actually figured it out for me or something.

7. Choose ‘load network card modules’ and choose your NIC from the list.

8. It will then say ‘module xxxx loaded’ Press OK

9. ‘enter parameters for card’ press RETURN

10. ‘module xxxx loaded successfully’ Press OK

11. Now go back to main menu and choose ‘start installation or system’

12. Next choose ‘start installation or update’

13. Choose ‘network’

14. Choose ‘ftp’

15. Choose ‘automatically configure via DHCP’ unless you want to put in your own data for your router

16. Next you have to enter the IP address of a location the content of your OS will be downloaded from.  The installation will take care of it from there once you put in the IP and the location where it is downloaded.  Here is one such place:::::
 This is the IP:       195.129.111.8
        Use username/password : No
        Use HTTP proxy : No
 This is the directory:        /pub/linux/suse/i386/9.2

17.  Follow the prompts and you are on your way to getting SuSE!

The download takes... quite a while.  Mine took at least 3 hours I'd guess.  Not sure.  Linux takes patience, and if you have any questions I'll be glad to answer them.
