Laptop Surfin'
« on: May 6, 2005 08:57 pm CDT »
Alright, the time has come for me to update my aging machine, and I decided to shell out the extra bucks to get a laptop instead of a desktop. I'm just not at home enough to make use of a immobile computer, so my laptop is going to have to pick up the slack and be my gaming machine as well. I'll pay the price. Cheaper than buying a malarkeyty laptop and a decent desktop.

Anyway, I've been looking around for prices and hardware, but most of the "deals", like hardware found at Newegg.com, don't seem to ship to Canada. That's where you come in. Where's a good place/company/establishment to pick up a high-end laptop at a decent price, and doesn't involve me driving to west coast USA from east coast Canada?

Look at it this way; the quicker I pick this machine up, the quicker I add points to the folding@HOME team.  8)

Hmm, since you cant do newegg, cdw just might do you.

For a "deal", I recommend Acer notebooks:
http://www.cdw.com/shop/tools/sbb/vendor.aspx?Mfg=ACE

My girlfriend and my mom both own the one found for $700, and the performance is pretty solid.  Plus, the cooling system is pretty silent as well, a plus for notebooks today which are usually loud.

The integrated wireless' performance is solid as well.  My mom, who doesnt have internet, pulls a steady 10KB/s from her neighbor's house a hundred-fifty or so feet away.  Thats good for the distance I guess.

For a steal, I recommend registering at [H]ardOCP.com and visiting their For Sale and Trade forum: http://www.hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17

Seriously, just keep checking back every day and you'll find a golden deal on a used laptop.
OR, just post that you are looking for a laptop, and the sellers will flood you with good deals.

This Lap that i'm using now is Acer Ferrari.. GOD DAMN GOOD DEAL. 2,700 for it and its got good stuff, 80gig HD, AMD 3000+, Radeon 9700, and cd dvd combo burner. It runs tribes and other games so well. BUT... Ut2k3 not so well. I think i need to upgrade to 1 gig of ram its only 512 now. but everything with the acer laps is really good.

Runing UT2k3 bad with that sort of setup makes no sense.

I suggest reinstalling your copy of windows.  Perhaps a version not supplied with acer.

Of course he could be playing it with everything maxed and wondering why it isn't playing smoothly.
