Laptop Cooling

Looking for ways to cool my laptop a little extra.  It has one fan out the back right now, I'm sure some crappy thermal paste, etc.  It's a Dell Inspiron 6000 with an extra stick of 512MB RAM that I've tossed into it.  I plan on making a trip up to Fry's for some Arctic Silver 5 and looking at what else they have that might help.  Any ideas on other parts I could use?  Are there certain fans that move more air than what I would have now?  Any help is welcome.

More air means more noise, but yes.  Look at SVC.com for cooling gear, including heatsinks, pastes, and fans.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

I saw all the stands/risers with fans that sit under the laptop.  I guess I was really wondering if there were internal fixes or if a fan with more cubic feet per minute and better thermal paste is the best i could do.

Freon is a brand name.  The correct term is refrigerant and there are quite a few types such as R-22, R-12, 404a, 409, RB-276, 134a, MP-66, etc.  Or more specifically, R-22 is monochlorodifluoromethane and R-12 is dichlorodifluoromethane.  Those are the only two I know by memory.

Eh, it's just one of those things.  Didn't mean to make such a big deal of it.

Lol, some interesting chemistry, but back to the real question?  An no, I don't think Freon is what I was looking for. :?

In my dell smartstep 200n, I replaced the thermal material (they used some really messy wax, terrible compound), removed the aluminum foil from the keyboard to release heat through the keys, and drilled holes in the bottom of the laptop.

Risers are great.  I stack cd cases under the corners of my laptop to let it run cooler at night (so that the fan runs slower/quieter).

I looked at the back of the keyboard, no foil there.  As for drilling holes...  I don't think I was wanting that kind of comitment.  :)

The foil's primary purpose is to guard against EMF (causes instability).

Also, there was a heatpipe that was molded into the copper heatsink over the Pentium4 in my laptop.  This created a giant bulge in the heatsink, so I lapped that down to a smooth base.

Also, if you are careful and have a processor with a heatspreader, you can lap that down (I lapped my P4, it has copper underneath the nickel).  Just be sure not to bend any pins!  I spent 3 hours bending back the ones on mine!
