XGL Live CD = Awesome
« on: March 10, 2006 09:20 am CST »
A Gentoo Linux distrobution called Kororaa released a live cd on March 8, which includes the latest version of Gnome and XGL/Compiz.

If you dont know what XGL is, here you go:
Ok, now, all you crazy windows users know that the environment is called "explorer", right?  Well, in linux, it is simply called "X".  Now, imagine "X" rendered completely in openGL.  Eye-forking-candy galore.  The windows wobble, the entire desktop is built upon a cube.  There are now finally true rendered transparencies.  By far, this kills Vista and OSX's visuals, in my opinion.  Also, it adds an expose-like effect when you press F12.

So, download the ISO and burn her to a disk, boot her up, and give it a try!

The download mirros have been hit pretty hard in the last day, due to a recent digg effect, but I got mine at a reasonable 200K/s last night.

Believe it or not, putting most of the load for eye candy on the graphics card really is very efficient.  In regular gnome, if you grab and window and drag it around while looking at the system monitor, you'll see the processor usage go up to 100% easily.  Not so using XGL.

Hey, heres a video of it too:

Explorer is not the counterpart for X.  X is the rendering system while Explorer is the shell itself.  Explorer would be a counterpart to Gnome or KDE.

Anyhow, I'll give it a look.  Is this something specific to Kororaa or is this just the latest Gnome's interface by default?

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Actually, the only thing specific to this livecd is the fact that it includes XGL.  Dapper Drake Flight 4 (ubuntu) also includes XGL, but I'm not sure how compatible the distro is with ati cards.

Also, this is gentoo based, instead of debian based.

I myself cant wait til this is ready for general public release (on Ubuntu "Dapper Drake").  I'll be more careful when using alpha-stage OS's.  When I enabled xgl and compiz after dist-upgrading, it broke X, and I didnt know how to fix it except to format.  A bummer in that, about a month's worth of data.  Need to improve my backup schedule.

I ran it, but it's really buggy with the R420 core.  The video is garbled quite often.
