I installed a GeForce 6600 in a friend's linux machine last night.  Here's all you have to do to install an nVidia driver (as opposed to an ATI):
1.  Boot up in "maintenence/rescue mode".
2.  Set the GCC compiler to the one the kernel was made with (eg "export CC=gcc-3.4"
3.  Run the setup: "sh NVIDIA-blah-blah-blah.run"
4.  It takes care of removing old modules, configuring your x config file, building the new modules, etc.  It's easier than using the packaged ATI drivers even.
5.  Restart:  "reboot now"

Upgrading is a snap, just go through the process again.  As I said, it takes care of old modules for you.  ATI drivers on the other hand require you to make packages, remove the old ones, install the new ones, dick with aticonfigure/fglrxconfig (depends how old the drivers are), screw with restricted libs, and pray it will work...because it won't half the time.

What do you get for your efforts installing an ATI driver?  One of two main possibilities:
1)  No 3D support (MESA still being used).
-or-
2)  Buggy 3D support that's slower than crap.

What do you get for your efforts installing an nVidia driver?  Really, only one result:
1)  3D just like you would have in Windows with an nVidia based card.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

Again I will throw in a disagreement with the statement that ATI 3D in Linux is slower than crap.  

My 3D performance on UT2K4 running native in linux using a 9800XT surpasses that of what I get on my barebones Windows install.

I distinctly remember a website called cool-text.com that had a script which automatically made banners in that EXACT format.  I used to use one as my sig until I learned how to make my own.

Of course it does, but I just want to not that Windohs is capable of the same update system... it is a piece of crap,  but it is there and rarely works right, if at all (seperate from windows update.)

Anyway... windows does that stuff, very poorly.  I put the winky face in there to portray my half-joking intent.

LINUX lover here too.  I mainly use Win XP, but love restoring older systems with Damn Small Linux using one of the small windows shells.  Never would imagine that some of those old systems could still be useful.  Heck if you have a 4 GB HD and 128 MB RAM, install the whole KNOPPIX cd as a Debian system, runs great for regular stuff, and it's preloaded with bunches O software.
