the casing is totally destroyed, bent in (i kicked the front until the plastic shattered)

i never had to deal with forking malarkey like this on my old comp, which was a freebie, i go out and I BUY an 800 dollar comp, ARGHHHH

I am wondering, is there a 1394 to CAT-5 cable? That might suit me just fine, just as long as I dont have to waste my money on another network card.

[Personal story section, skip down to next paragraph for the point]
I've never heard of anything like a rj45 to firewire adapter or cable, but that doesn't mean it isn't out there.  The dorm rooms I moved into had rj11 network drops in the rooms so I went to the uber nerd local computer store that has a cable section the size of my house.  The 3 guys there, who have worked in the industry since the days of trash 80s, had never heard of anyone using a setup like that.  Ended up having to splice myself a cable instead of waiting the 2 weeks for new ones to arrive from god knows where.

The best place I've found for finding things like this out though is here
http://www.offspringtech.com/Data_Spring.html
They do custom jobs, so send them a message and see if they could do it.  But they don't have anything like that listed on their site's catalog.  You can get a working PC card for about 10 bucks including shipping online, might even get a better deal from clearance items locally too.

[Insulting shorty section]
And shorty, if you are stupid enough to buy trash equipment then you deserve it.  Don't blame people for ripping people off who are too stupid to ask someone for help.  Besides a 56.6 goes for like 5 bucks these days.  Also, don't blame the computer for your idiocy.

Sorry Dar, but there's no such thing as a FireWire 1394 to CAT5 networking cable.

Now to your problem.  How was your network connected in the first place?  I need to know the exact set up, meaning do you have a router, and if so where was your ADSL modem hooked up?

Also, if all you did was format, no need to go into BIOS.  Things will only then start to mess up for you.

Gotta love SBC with their 6Mbps tier for 45$
(Yes, on their site it only shows 3Mbps, but it is actually 6Mbps, I would know :)).

Doh!  LoL, I guess problem solved lol.  Even though I didnt call back dell support, a guy came by anyway and picked it up while I was at school.  Guess I wont have to spend my easily earned cash on that  :?

What's a guy to do?!  Guess I'm just gonna hang out on the forums til then...

I say firewire is the ethernet of the future.  400mbps transfer is hella fast.

Yes, it is "hella" fast, but the only problem is, other technologies still have to come a long way before it is mainstream.  You have to also remember, a hard-disk drive is going to have a hard time writing at 48828.125 KB/sec.  It is slowly but surely making its way, but I think the 'ol copper wires will still be around a while.

Well I mean for stuff like gaming. Im sure that if I spent a few hours digging, I bet I could find something to bridge firewire to ethernet.

Now I gotta figure out what I'm gonna do with just a sucky computer. Hmmmm... my xbox awaits...

*edit*
Gersh dernit, dell technical support is great, but finding the right number to call sucks.  Sooo fork.ing bored without good comp.

You know what would kick major ass?  If they messed up when replacing the GPU and replaced it with an even better one.  I would go HUZZAH!
