Wireless Connectivity

Yesterday I picked me up an 802.11b card for my laptop ($40, a good deal), and I brought it to my friend's house who has an Apple Airport (which would work except...). I dont have the WEP key/code thing needed to access the network, and I believe they dont know either.  Jason, this is more a question for you.  Is there possibly a WEP crack?

I know zealch about wireless networking.  I haven't had the chance to play with it yet, and I don't think I would ever be interested in it unless it gets faster than 11Mbps, and I don't even know if 45Mbps 802.11g would satisfy me.

Gotta love SBC with their 6Mbps tier for 45$
(Yes, on their site it only shows 3Mbps, but it is actually 6Mbps, I would know :)).

Bah, most cables only get like 10mbps right?  Particle says that wireless just adds only like 10 ping to lag.  What was the solution for wireless before 802.11b?  What did they use before that?

802.11 defines all wireless standards.

g's just a combination of A and B

A:  short range (even compared to B) but max of 54 megabit
B:  longer range (almost 1000ft in clearings) but max of 11 megabit

Unless they configured it themselves, WEP is probably totally disabled.

No, the network connections chooser (for when it detects the network) clearly states that a WEP key has been placed on that network adaptor, and nobody in that household knows what it is/how to get it.  I would call the apple store, but I dont feel like talking to a gay guy whos phone keeps slipping out of his hand because his wrist is too limp  :lol:

Darwin, WEP is always disabled by default in access points.  Unless they're doing Ad-Hoc, it would have had to been enabled.

In any case you can reconfigure the card or access point.

I'll take a look in the Apple Airport manual.  

You see, my friend has a brother who is a dick and turned on WEP for security purposes (even though he lives on like 4 acres and doesnt have to worry about ppl stealing his access).

I have 128bit WEP enabled on my WiFi network, too.  I live on the edge of town around some old people.

Ok I am now in search of a wireless router/access point.  I want one computer to be hooked in by wire, and the other to be able to use wireless.  Would an access point do that for me?  Can I get a recommendation on a cheap 802.11b product?
