The New Star Trek Movie *No Spoilers Zone*
« on: May 8, 2009 05:35 pm CDT »
They were right in saying that "this isn't your father's trek". Lots of ups and a few minor downs, but considering a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's pretty forking good. Some points of mine to make....

* It's different....not in the "Indiana Jones was raped" way, but it left me feeling uncomfortable, but still very excited
* Lots of Epic Shots through the movie
* A few silly and pointless scenes
* As a movie, it was EXCELLENT. As Star Trek, it was...well, it was different.
* Lots and lots and lots of homages to Original Series Star Trek with words, plot devices, etc
* The music was very good. Fresh and new, big, exciting
* A little on the gruesome side. Something new for Star Trek.

I plan on seeing this and the Wolverine movie tomorrow. Hope it's not too crowded...

Wolverine supposedly sucked, but tell me how it is.

Well, from what I've heard, it sucked if you were a fan of the comics. Everyone else, though, has been saying it was pretty good for an action movie. Turned out that I didn't get to see either movie yesterday, so here's to hoping for today...

i saw it in imax on saturday of opening weekend..  one of the best movies i have seen in a long time!  awesome acting, music, visuals..  you will love it even if you aren't a star trek fan.  i was pleasantly surprised!

it was great, because every time there was an infamous line from the show (like "damnit jim, i'm a doctor not a physicist!"), everybody in the audience clapped and cheered..  one of the best movie going experiences i have ever had.

mmm so many different types of music, so little time.

I saw it opening night.

I was pleasantly surprised and thankful that the plot involved main characters and common understandings within the Trek Verse, though my one big complaint involves the re-use of the same major device of most of the movies Generations+ because I really think there are other interesting ways to involve the same people with out the same tired scenario; we know how it supposedly works and don't need it spelled out it yet an other rehashing.

Other than that, yeah I pretty much agree with Koro's take; it was totally worth the 6$ I paid, but still was not quite the Star Trek we all know from the first 7 movies or any of the series (other than Series: Enterprise... which was horrible)

Anyway... I'd say it's worth the cash to see it in a theatre, even if you're not a Trek fan; entertaining and not too much or too little "science" to mess with.

I've been holding off to see this with a friend flying in from AZ in a couple weeks.  I'm really excited to see them taking the thing in a different direction, style-wise.  I'll love it either way as I love the universe, and if this is what it takes to get more people interested in Trek so be it.  We'll get more shows and movies.  :)

It's really interesting how so many non-Trek fans (most of my friends, my brother's gf and her friends, etc) want to see this. I can't count how many people have told me they loved the movie, considering they've never watched Star Trek in the past.

I absolutely HATE the Star Trek (and any affiliated shows) that airs on the TV, and the movies too.

Is there any chance I will enjoy this movie?

Ps.  I once WON 2 movie tickets to a Star Trek movie. I ripped them up and threw them away. That's how much of a Star Trek fan I am.

You're throwing away 2 hours of solid entertainment, if that makes you feel guilty?

I'm not talking about the newest one.

I mean one of the older ones. I don't remember the name of it.

I decided I'd rather go outside for the 2 hours, rather than watch a malarkeyty movie. :)

Hi guys!!!

I went and saw both movies.

Liked the X-men, just wished they would follow the comic more.

Loved the Star Trex.

Probably Nemesis or Insurrection. I hated Nemesis. That B-4 dude is NOT Data. They did terrible things to my most beloved Star Trek series. (TNG).

On a side note:
The common theme I was hinting at is the time-line paradox BS that seems to occur on all of the movies since IV, except for "Insurrection" which was a completely lame piece of garbage anyway... they tried too hard in some ways and not hard enough in others; it was not epic, it was forgettable.
I honestly can not understand how ST8 beat ST2... Wrath of Khan is forking great!
Also, I think critics have become way more bi-polar these days... rather that critical... it's "love/hate"... arrG!
