New planet discovered around Alpha Centauri
« on: October 19, 2012 05:44 am CDT »
Anyone else hear about this? Apparently it's Earth-sized, at least in terms of mass, and the star is Sun-like. Unfortunately, as is almost always the case, the planet is closer to its parent star than Mercury is to the sun, so it's probably tidally locked and roasting on one side while freezing on the other. Still, cool that there's malarkey to explore right "next door". Using an ultra-efficient ion engine or other thruster, we could theoretically send a probe now that would get there in <100 years.

I think it's just in the habitable zone and is somewhat larger than Terra Firma.

Hey!!! Hey!!! Did you notice how many more planets we've found in the 10 months since this happened?
