Yes, but they aren't used to their full ability..

Where as Mac's are..

You can install 32bit OSs on the G5s

Used to their full ability? Do you really understand what 64bit brings to the table? The ability to address more memory. Nothing more, nothing less. Any other benefit comes from the implentation, not 64bit in and of itself.

In addition, if what you say IS true, then we can expect more performance out of AMD64 chips than we are presently seeing, making them surpass the G5's.

I never said they couldn't when they have an OS to back them.

Apparently you don't know the technology in a 64bit chip, if that is what you say the difference is.

A 64bit instruction set adds ONLY the ability to address more than 4GB of memory. There can be other implementation characteristics (like AMD's addition of GPRs) that can improve performance. Listen, I know what I'm talking about. I'm researching buying myself a dual Opteron setup (been running SMP for many years now). I talk to people and read from people who use and implement 64bit chips every day.

In addition, you state that the Macs use full benefit from the 64bit instruction set of the G5. This is not true. Many applications STILL do not take advantage of the AltiVec instructions (roughly analogous to SSE) available on the G5. Why don't we just both agree that 64bit computing on the desktop is still in its infancy, and leave it at that.

Oh my god who really gives a flying fork.

64 bit code is slower than 32 bit code.

What the hell are you gonna do with all that power on a G5?  Photoshop.  Thats it.

Christ.  We are forking gamers here people.  We. Play. Games.  The MacOS environment is not too good for games.  Nor is linux (for the time being).

I dont understand why people always bicker about this malarkey.  There is really a significant difference in the graphics cards we were orignally talking about, its a fact.  But oh my god, the fact that your photoshop rendering loads .5 seconds faster on one processor than on another makes a rediculous argument.

I'm saying this because eViL has been pinging this stuff off me for the last month or so.  I just tell him:

Its
Just
Fast
