Overclocking
« on: August 3, 2002 05:27 pm CDT »
Alright guys. I thought I'd share this with you since we need topics and this is general discussion. Here's my story of my Athlon XP 1900+ overclocking experience.

My 1.2GHz Thunderbird was getting old. Quite frankly, it was too damn slow for what I do anymore. I could only overclock it to 1.3GHz, which wasn't enough for me.

I made up my mind to buy an Asus A7V333 to replace my aging Asus A7M266 and to buy an AMD Athlon XP 1900+ CPU... so I did.

My 1900 went about as far as my thunderbird: 145MHz FSB. I had long since come to the conclusion that it was my PCI cards that started to cause instabilities at around 145MHz (36MHz PCI bus - 4MHz over spec). I then decided to get an unlocking kit--kit because there wasn't a single damn place in Parsons that sells a conductive pen.

It ended up taking me an hour to calm my crack baby hands down enough (about 5 unlocking attempts) to where the leads were traced right. On the last attempt, I decided that it looked good enough and stuck it in my rig. Sure enough, on the first boot with an unlocked processor (I had been redoing it without trying it in a computer) it worked! Success!

I am now running at 10x175MHz. This gives me a speed of 1.75GHz (+175MHz from default) with a DDR speed of 350MHz. My DDR frequency is close to the rambus frequency of a Pentium 4. DDR is much better than rambus architectures at the same speed, due to rambus having a higher latency than DDR.

I benchmarked my computer and here are the results:
4800 MIPS
2300 MFLOPS
2.4GB/s DRAM Bandwidth
(Curtosey of SiSoft Sandra)

Heh, with a FSB of 42MHz above normal (84MHz DDR) my machine screams and can kick a P4's ass to the moon and back. If anybody has comments or questions, post them! I'm eager to reply.

hey particle, if you want your processor to last longer, don't overclock it to much, and when you do overclock a processor, be sure to increase the cooling system.

I am using a solid copper heatsink with a heatpipe system.  I run 44 degrees Celcius, and I never plan to use a CPU more than about a year. Next year I hope to own a hammer system.

wow, i wuldnt dare do anything like that, lemme tell you my hot hot story.

i used to have an 800 Mhz p3, and a 7200 rpm hard drive, why mention the harddrive you ask? because this 2 year old system didnt come with any case fans and the high speed drive this summer heated up to 49 degrees celsius and caused large sections of registry and windows itself to go bad.  the sections it was reading corrupted from the heat.  well i ended up reformatting twice and then it worked fine for a few days with me keeping a close watch on the heat and never running file sharing more than an hour.

i was downloading quake 2 on IRC and the continuous use heated up the drive and wrecked it again, this time taking out some of the motherboard as well.  i didnt realize that, turned it off and the next day took it in to the shop.  they couldnt get it to even post booting screen, and knew something serious was wrong.  replaced the processor riser (P3 was Slot A, vertical on a riser card)  but that didnt work, and ended up replacing the whole motherboard, of course they dont make the same old model so the new one is 833Mhz celeron, they claim celeron "doesnt suck as much as you say it does", i then went on ebay and got meself one case fan and three harddrive fans for $13  and now my drive runs at 37 degrees celsius, a much safer, yet still hot, condition.

i dont know how hot the processor is, the new celeron has a much larger heatsink than my old one because now that it is flat on the motherboard it can take the weight ;)  it looks to be aluminum, and i dont know anything about that sort of thing.  i just know that it runs gta3 and winamp and kazaa and XP nicely, and that i want one of those plexiglass and neon light cases you see on overclocker's websites.

I have a need for speed.  Later today, I am going to see how high I can get the clock speed.

I have a trail of dead components if you want them.

I have had about 4 dead motherboards (3 were DOA though).  The motherboard that died ruined the CPU, and I have had three or four dead hard drives.
