Google Web Accelerator
« on: May 4, 2005 07:30 pm CDT »
Google just released a new tool for IE and Firefox that uses Google servers as a proxy for web content, delivering the pages to your system more rapidly and compressing them beforehand.

This will save much time sometimes when going through online photo albums and the like!

This looks like a good idea, but when I read the yadayada page (when you install, you will see what I'm talking about) and it said it would sometimes request content you don't ask for and then store it in your cache...  I'm not so sure I like the idea of that.  I may give it a go later, but I'm not in any need of making my speeds faster, I'm quite satisfied.

If it works like a proxy, probably not, but I'm not sure if this tool allows you to broadcast your own IP as opposed to the google server IPs.  Cable is fast enough for me, and as gladio mentioned, I don't like the idea of things being stored on my computer that I don't put there.

FYI - Read the "Fine Print" on Google.
They reserve the right to keep files/information as long as they see fit AND reserve the right to sell/give that information to whom ever they choose.
This INCLUDES all of your "Gmail"!
So, Just remeber:  If you email it with google, they have it, and always will.

Good thing I only use gmail as yet another means to share music.  They can have all the mp3s they want. ;)

Hmm, after spending a day with it, its a pretty good tool.  Unfortunately, there is a definate kink in the system.  Its horrible if you like to play videos that are integrated into your browser (such as gamespot).
