Running Dapper Drake..

The beta (Ubuntu Dapper Drake <6.06>) was released a day or so ago, so I burned me a copy and did a freshie.  It is pretty impressive for a beta, and there are bugs here and there.  Funny thing though, is that the fixes keep getting released every hour or so.  Real cool that I get software updates that quick.  My user experience in the last 10 hours has gone from:  ehhhh to Uh Huh!

Something that has really impressed me is the use of the Gnome Deskbar.  Say I am looking for a particular peice of software that the Ubuntu repositories carry.  I just type it in, and it will usually choose to look in the repositories.  If it chooses the wrong one, I can easily guide it back to where I want it.

So anyway, make yourself a partition, and install Dapper 6.06.  That is all, grasshoppers.

Heh, I'm sorry for how random this thread is, and how it was rather pointless to post this, since 1/2 of the stuff I talk about here on this forum nowadays is Linux.  Anyway, Particle, any chance that Uberclockers might resurface?  It would be a fun place for me to rant about Ubuntu.

I am currently running Dapper Drake. Have been since before it went beta because breezy wouldn't work with my nic.  I didnt even know about the deskbar.  I'll have to try it out and see how I like it.  

Ubuntu has been my favorite distro so far. Gentoo was too much work to keep running as a desktop.

Amarok has to be the best music player.  If it played videos it would be the best media player out there.

Tribes runs great under wine.  So does Half Life, WoW, etc.

What sound output are you using for AmoroK?  I found that switching to Alsa sped up Amarok very significantly.  But I am a rythmbox person, myself.  Its just a little more light on resources.

Also, what methods have you used to get flash to work with Firefox in dapper?  I tried  flashplugin-nonfree, but it is quite the buggy thing.  Menus dont appear right, and flash movie speeds are terrible.

In breezy, installing flash in firefox was just as easy as installing through windows would have been.

That worked for me for flash.

In amarok the xine engine says autodetect so I dont know what it uses.
Tribes run at the same speed in cedega that it does in windows. Any source engine game like hl2 runs like crap compared to windows even with nvidia drivers.

Yeah, HL2 looks like a loooong way off.  What really needs to be done is to put more pressure on developers to develop using OpenGL instead of DirectX.

And since you're a dapper-phase vet, any place you might know where I can get info on installing my Wacom tablet under Dapper?  I had it running flawlessly under breezy (w/o pressure sensitivity, I never use it anyway).  I would follow the Breezy wacom installation instructions so long as I could be assured it was safe.

Heheheh.  Jumped the gun and did it anyway.  Broke my build, so Ive reinstalled breezy.  I'll just wait a couple months after the final release.  It should be ready for me then.  I've broken this build of linux over 5 times in the last couple of days getting XGL to work.  Never panned out, but someday it will.

It only works sometimes.  It connects to a website to download and install flash.

Did you ever get XGL to work or is that fake transparency?
