A good comparison of game mechanics change is when Blizzard when from WarCraft2 to WarCraft3.  Those were some big changes.  Blizzard was still able to keep the same type of game and keep the original fans happy.
You make a really good point, and I do agree with you on that. There's only one problem....

A TON of people unsavory womaned about Warcraft 3 because, gameplay-wise, it sucked comared to Warcraft 2. I don't want them to repeat history.

The WarCraft3 gameplay is not crappy compared to the WarCraft2 gameplay.  Those people who unsavory womaned did so because they're afraid of change.  WarCraft3 gameplay is better than every other rts except StarCraft.  A lot of the complaints I found about WarCraft3 were due to you being able to change the camera from top view to cinematic view, and that's it.  Yet there were even more people who praised it.

Eh...I wasn't one of them who praised it. The whole idea of a moveable camera irked me, because if I felt the need to zoom in on the face of every single unit, I'd play an RPG instead. But since I'm supposed to be commanding an army, the more I can see on my screen at once, the better.

Don't get me wrong though, it's a nice idea, but I think it's just not implemented in a good way. It's flashy, but not really useful. I think that's what Blizzard is going for in SC2: Focusing more on graphics and less on gameplay. But, that's just what it LOOKS like. Won't actually know until the game comes out.

A completely free camera is by far the best.  Look at Supreme Commander if you need proof.  Scrolling around will become annoying, even out of the game once you've gotten used to pure zooming.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

WC3 is slow, and there's practically no macro... it's a decent game though.

I guess that's the general idea im trying to portray..i dunno, i just can't lay my finger on it.

The best comparison I can make is how Tribes 1 was so much better than Tribes 2, even tho T2 had better graphics and such.

That no macro comment is just plain wrong.  The macro may have been crappy at release, but with patches the macro has become amazing.

The camera for WC3 was added for more possibilities and to make some of the cinematics easier to make.  They added it just for cosmetics mainly.  Nothing wrong with added cosmetics.  SC2 has not focused on graphics in any way.  The ingame graphics aren't that much of an improvement from WC3.  The cinematics are a great improvement, but who wouldn't expect that.  Considering that they haven't released much gameplay information how can you know if they're doing poor gameplay choices?  Those abilities are added to make the gameplay more fast pased and difficult.  What's wrong with that?  Warhammer 40k Dawn of War had stuff like that and the gameplay is purely amazing.  Sure it didn't get much attention in America, but it was gold in Europe and Austrialia.

T2 was also bad because of the changes they made making it more difficult to mod.  T1 lived on because of the modding ability.

On WC3 with that cinematic view they added it was possible for Blizzard to release a custom map that was like Mario Cart.  It's a very fun map.  I've spent hours playing it with friends laughing and having fun because it was just so crazy.  You have to look at it not just from a regular melee/ladder point of view but also a custom map point of view.  From what I saw on some of the SC2 footage they also made it possible to rotate the camera.  That makes the gameplay even better.

Oh and about WC3 being slow, it's only slow depending on who you're facing.  I personally love to rush harass.  Most people love to sit back and tech.  fork that.  You want to do that against me then you'll get forked in the ass.

It feels slow, I'm not talking about teching, or weather or not you go and harass your opponet with a demon hunter, or w/e hero you choose. Most units seem to take forever to get to an opponets base, they also live alot longer (only because there's a 100 pop limit) but it's annoying, and overall it just feels damn slow.

I wouldn't know about the updates but if you can still put multiple buildings on a hotkey = practically no macro, but I'm accustomed to games like Starcraft and AOE 2.

I have to say--I'm looking forward to Starcraft 2.  I'm also looking forwad to playing Starcraft with a reasonable AI that I can actually beat.
