This Has to Stop
« on: December 16, 2002 05:20 pm CST »
I am going to have to find a cheap host for these forums. They're starting to get popular I suppose, but in the process I am getting lagged out my ass. It's probably no joy ride for you guys either, but when my ping in CS is 400ms sustained for 30 seconds (not just a spike here and there--which is bad enough) it is going to far. Alright. Now I need to find a host.

If anybody knows of a good host for $5-10/mo supporting CGI, PHP, and Perl--let me know. I'll be looking as well. No less than 10GB/mo traffic.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

You know, gamespy and planettribes could help you.  After all, they already host the download for tribes rpg.  Why not give them a buzz and ask for a lift.

Do you know somebody who owns a business?

You know, I just thought of a brilliant plan.  My grandfather owns a firm in downtown memphis.  What i am thinking is that I could have his firm host your forums.  I believe he has business class DSL, and Im sure there isnt that much traffic going through it.

But I will need details. I need to know what you would require, if hosting this would be transparent (leaving no icons, etc.) and if there is anything else I need to know.

What Im thinking is that I could just sneak it onto their server.  They have only one IT guy, and he only drops in when they have computer problems.

I run off of business-class DSL.  Doesn't help any.

Shouldnt matter, just wanted you to know they have a broadband connection at that office.

So, if I were to host it, would it be transparent on the server?  Or would there always be a (visible) program running?

Awesome.

Do you have family that runs a business? An uncle perhaps? I have an aunt in an IT department of some corp. in Nashville, and she slips me free surplus RAM and ethernet cable sometimes. Too bad her company doesnt issue Radeon 9700 pro's...

Oh, and Jason Xero, I just tricked bellsouth into swapping my USB ADSL modem for an Ethernet ADSL modem. Oh joy.  It will only cost 15 bucks for shipping.

Or you could have just told them you had trouble with your service and you didn't get service for a month.  They would then disconnect your DSL (for free, no contract break), and just reorder your DSL and get free modem with free shipping.

Btw, a business-grade DSL, I assume you mean Bellsouth, sucks for Web-Hosting.  It is capped by a ridiculously low 384Kbps.

Gotta love SBC with their 6Mbps tier for 45$
(Yes, on their site it only shows 3Mbps, but it is actually 6Mbps, I would know :)).

Do you mean that by upload speed?  Cause if its the download speed, I'd better tell my grandfather that he's getting ripped.

Southwestern Bell's business DSL is 1.5Mbit down and 128Kbit up.  That sucks for hosting.  It should be 256Kbit (as with their new packages) but they think my house is too far and they wonder why... they dropped the signal strength they used to use by almost half.

Actually Dar, all those listed hosts don't impress me.  I am not going to put up with banners or slow hosts.

Actually their new package* is Deluxe package, which offeres 768Kbps-1.5Mbit/256Kbps (which I have) for 49.99 a month with their contract, 59.99 month-to-month.  Business grade is 1.5Mbits-6.0Mbits/384Kbps.  Look em up if you like http://www01.sbc.com/DSL_new/content/0, ... I=&RI=&RD=  Expert Plus - S Package being same for Business*

This is what I am talking about:
http://www01.sbc.com/DSL_new/content/0, ... I=&RI=&RD=

This is the old package, before the one above was there:
http://www01.sbc.com/DSL_new/content/0, ... I=&RI=&RD=

That's what I use.  Costs $10/mo more for the same package according to the contract as well.

Part three- Downloading at 54kbps
Total download speed- 176 kbps

Beat you!  I dont know how, but I am.  Perhaps it's because it came off an FTP site.  I dont know.

Damn these are big files.  Good thing they are made to burn onto CD. -- 694mb+456mb+699mb= 1.84 GB.  DAHAMN!!!
