Ozzy Goes Hardcore
« on: September 20, 2003 12:27 pm CDT »
After recently playing quite a few strategy games, I have decided to make ANOTHER Tribes Mod..

All of you are invited to test. Just look for the server name "Ozzy Goes Harcode" The password is hardcore.

This mod is supposed to resemble a RTS (Real Time Strategy). I just started yesterday, so don't expect too much right not.. I just need you guys to get on and see what guns need more power and what needs less power ect.

I have made a little FAQ for you guys..

Q: Why doesn't my energy fall when I fly?

A: In this mod, your energy bar resembles your overall armor energy. Everytime you get damaged, it falls and slowly recharges. Should it completely fall, You take full damage without armor reduction which would kill you very quickly.

Q: Does this mean my favorite gun the Laser Rifle is gone?

A: No. All weapons now use ammo.

Q: My base was raped and I can't pick up a repair pack!

A: Repair pack is disabled in this mod for the overall strategy purpose. If you lose a station, it is gone.. Think about building new bases around the map.

Q: Where is the flag?

A: This mod doesn't support CTF maps. The only map playable right now (Broadside) has been edited. In place of the flags, tower switches have been placed. This means if your base gets sieged, they can take it and use your inventory stations ect. Of course custom maps for this mod will have to be made in the future. I would be happy if anyone would like to contribute a well balanced map for it.

Q: That heavy armor is impossible to stop!

A: They have a lot of armor energy. All you have to do is overwhelm them at the same time.. They are easy to destroy when alone.

Q: I love your mod idea Ozzy. Can I help in any way?

A: Right now, the only thing you can do is be honest when testing. The server will be resetting quite often with new updates.

Q: You big meanie! You are turning people away from Particle's server!

A: My intentions are not anything of the such. He runs a TRPG server, I am running another mod. I know from my own experience TRPG gets boring after a while. I'm here to give people something new to enjoy.

Q: Why am I lagging on your server?

A: Because of me constantly changing things, it will be a little laggy. If someone is willing to host a home for the mod once I get an official release out, thats fine.

Q: Can I make a suggestion on things to add?

A: Though I do always welcome suggestions, I have a set list of items I'm trying to add. As for anything else, suggest away.

Q: You haven't changed anything!

A: Most of the changes have been behind the scenes. Don't turn it down now.. Remember, I just started this yesterday.

If you have anything that should be added to this, ask away or whatever.

Initial problems...

    - With the lack of repair packs, you are restricted to light armor only. Remote inventory stations can't change your armour, and can't reproduce new inventories,
and have limited energy. Once the enemy destroys your stations, you're done, no matter how many "bases" you have set up.

- Heavy Armor is overpowered. Anyone can be taken down when travelling alone, not just Heavy, so that's not a flaw. One Heavy will own one Light. Two Heavies will own two Lights, and so on.

- With infinite flight, weapons like grenade launchers and mortars will be obsolete, and the chaingun will become even more abused.

- This mod doesn't seem to support any type of game except some sort of arena with bases. I don't mean actual mechanics, I mean playing. With infinite flight, that rules out all flag-type games, such as CTF and F&R. C&H would be reduced to a game of chicken, with one team flying above the objective, spamming it. Without repairing, D&D's out.
[/list]

I guess that's all for now. I know it's still early, but I'm pointing things out.

I forgot to mention something..

Like a strategy game, this will have resources.. And heavy armors cost alot. I haven't finished it though hence the fact you have infinite energy.

You are correct. You can't buy armors from remote stations. Right now.

*edit* I wouldn't worry about infinite flight.. There will be its downsides..

For instance.. Heavy Can't fly right now.. It can only "moon jump" The same goes for a medium carrying a pack.

Ohh.. I wouldn't worry about the chaingun... It is a close quarters weapon like it should have been..

Ow! My bandwidth! You could have converted that to a JPEG, you know.  :?

Anyway, the problem with the chaingun these days is interpolate and z0dd's checkerfire. That widened cone should really help, though. (It might even be too big.)

Cool Idea.  So basically it is all the standard Base loadout with a major change in gameplay?
Are all of the deployables still there?
  Will there be Plasma turrets?
  Will there be Deployable turrets?
Will you put cloak pack in to make things more exciting?

Gotta love SBC with their 6Mbps tier for 45$
(Yes, on their site it only shows 3Mbps, but it is actually 6Mbps, I would know :)).

think of the cone on the p90 in CS, that cone isn't that big, but its wide enough to really screw with your aim at long distances and be super accurate at close quarters.

No.. Most of the base weapons are staying, but when you switch armors, you must auto upgrade..

For instance.

A light armor can have a chaingun
A medium armor must use a heavy chaingun instead
a heavy armor would use even more upgraded vulcan (explosive bullets).

Deployables will consist of turrets, full inv stations, generators ect.. Each thing will take time to "build" before it comes active.

Thanks to an idea from eViL, each team can deploy resource nodes that "mine" for resources.. They have to be spaced quite a bit apart from eachother.. So this mod will be taking advantage of the whole map unlike others.

BTW, I am trying to pull a lot from Natural Selection.. The strategy part anyway.

actually like NS... at least thats where it came from.  in Natural Selection your team must take over the resource nodes in order to stay alive, otherwise your chance of winning slips away as you lose a lot of resources.  So the entire objective is to take over as many nodes as possible and hold them.

Well.. I have tested a few things out with GE..

Everything so far seems to be good.. The cone on the chaingun is perfect.. You can't hit malarkey 10 bt away, but half that and you are right on.. It does exactly what I wanted it to do.

Once I get the items and resources settled, it is going to start changing.. The object of the game will be to defeat the other side. In order to defeat them, you must stop them from respawning and kill all of them.

With this being said, you will have to "build" warp gates to warp infintry in. THe more you have, the faster they respawn if more than 1 are dead.

I'm still debating on how I will do upgrades.. I want to make a specific object for it, but it would have to be controlled by someone.. I guess the command console needs to be remade too.

I need to figure out how to handycap the light a bit more with their flying.. I don't want to hinder their agility any more, but I don't want them to be space fighting either.

*edit* I'm also going to have to make mediums and heavys a bit tougher..

I want them to be able to hold thier own a bit more than now.

I already told you what you could do Oz.  its up to you to either do it or blow it, doesn't bother me either way, but we both know what I said was very well described and if put in place, would really add a nice touch to the entire mod.

I dont think the mod should have flight at all.  You see, by giving people the ability to fly, they can overcome a resource node in a matter of seconds, and place thiers.  So itll turn into a battle over res.  I had a bunch more ideas, but im tired.
