Tribes no more
« on: September 25, 2003 10:45 pm CDT »
Well as you can tell the Number of server's and ppl's has dropped dramaticly...several thousands of ppls have left tribes... only a few reamin with ppls in them.. i give it about 1ooo ppls play tribes but 500 of them are on tribes..some times just 200ppls...
At this rate tribes will be no more because sierra will figure out that not many ppls play so why have in expence they dont need to have!
i give it about a year or 2 before tribes is gone forever!

Considering that Starseige is still around, and it is the predecessor to Tribes...

For those that don't see my line of reasoning, T1 still has more players then SS. As long as SS is around, T1 will be fine.

The Expence to keep the server's main input up! this is how it works.
you host a game!
the game Ip goes to sierra
when you look for the game sierra gives you the Servers that are currently up!.
without that we cannot play any hosted game's!

That isn't how it works..

It has nothing to do with sierra at all..

You don't need a master server to join other servers.

The master server is hosted by WON. Which won't go down because SS T2, and HL are all connected on the same server.. It doesn't cost sierra any money at all.

Won gets their money from advertisements.. And Won is getting plenty fo money from that.

I thought that the Dynamix servers were hosted by Sierra, not WON.. lol

That's why you could play CS when the Dynamix servers crashed about what, 2 years ago.. Then again, you know more about this then me. Just trying to work this all out in my head ;)

It doesn't take much bandwidth to run a master server..

In fact it is so low, that a good portion of Sierra's games are on a single pc hosted by WON.

To explain why other's didn't die is simple.. Software can crash and the PC still be operational.

Theres absoultely nothing wrong with that computer. I happen to have a similar one laying on the floor right beside me, its not plugged in but if it was...it'd work fine.  :)

Edit: I just thought of something, the box it came in serves more of a purpose then the computer...its  kinda sad.

uhhhh... that looks like a Fan-Maintained site to me.  That means that it's not an affiliate of sierra.  It says right on there "site hosted and maintained by Conan"

As for the master server, it could be run on something as simple as a 486 linux box sitting in the bottom of a rack of other "old" machines.  It's probably on a server computer of actual server class though, as they're designed to serve a hell of a lot more requests than a classic pentium II.

Anyhow... I'm getting off the tracks.

If tribes1 dies it'll suprise me.  There are still people out there playing netmech, and that game is as old as earthsiege 2!  (1995)

Adios!

The origional site was http://www.tribesplayers.com. Sine GameSpy made a much better website, Dynamix said screw it, you host it.
