I just bought Unreal II

It's a whole lot of pretty, but the engine isn't very efficient. I hope it'll be updated to UT2003's engine build when the XMP patch comes out...

Anyone else own this game? Is the beginning of Hell a framerate killer for you as well? (Imagine up to 1000 rendered snowflakes + A very detailed outdoor area...)

I look forward to beating the game by this weekend... I'll tell you what I think

I played it on a GF3 Ti500 no problem.  Very good game.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Maybe I should turn down the graphics settings

I'm running it on a 2.4 ghz Pentium 4 with 256 mb of ram, using a GeForce 4 MX(bleech!)...

I was running on a 1.6GHz 1900+ (barely OC'd at all, only make it to 1.7GHz for a time).  The MX series of the GF4's are actually GF2 cores.

Yeah, the GF4 is just a DX7 rehash card.

I played Unreal II on my Geforce3 (regular), it was a FPS hog, but not so bad at medium quality, 800x600.

On friday I'll be replacing it with a Gainward GeforceFX 5200 Pro (128mb) which I got for even more cheap, since a friend was replacing that with a 9700 Pro.

I need to find me a comparison sheet that has the FX 5200 pro and a GF3 included on it, so I can see the FPS difference.

As for that, make sure that graphic acceloration is enabled.  That had me confused for a couple months when suddenly all my new games that used OpenGL and Direct3d started to now work.  Also, when in doubt, reformat.

*edit*
Jason dont pounce on me because I bought a nVidia card.  I just need something to hold me out on Halo, HL2, and Doom III til I can afford a 9600pro - 9800pro (or maybe save up and get the TX version, 12% performance increase!  :D )

I watched it on a top-o-tha-line system when it first came out and thought it was pretty boring and that the enemies were even more "janky" than Unreal 1... though Unreal 1 kicked major ass.

The all-glowing enemy fire, and the run back and fourth shooting guys pooring in at equal and manageable intervals from two sides (one you just cleared out) was repedative and boring, especailly when it consisted of the same 1 or 2 enemies who shot the same lame glowing ammo at you as the next one.  I guess I am saying that I'm not that impressed with the glowing pink/green/etc weapon bolts, and I'm not impressed with the repedative jaggy-looking environments.

Unreal one, though jaggy, had a lot of variation in every level, and that's what I think made it so much fun to play; almost every room looked unique and had you searching for cover while dodging shots, which U2 doesn't seem to have much of.  For example, the only levels I didn't really like in Unreal were Tarranauix Underground (spelling?!) and the ooze-filled rooms shortly after it.  Those levels were repedative, predictable and not very varried in their architecture (though some broken stuff and destroyable stuff made up for that a little bit.)

ANyhow... Some may enjoy it, but I was bored listening to that bot-lady talk about lame stuff, and bored with the level designs. :-)

Peace!

Are you sure you bought Unreal II?  That doesn't sound anything like the game I played.   :?

I'm beginning to suspect Unreal II has a memory leak, takes longer to load levels as I run it for longer periods of time...

Well... I don't know you see... I just did the first 3 "levels" I think and that kinda made the impression on me that I got.  I stopped on the level where the dude was talking from the security room over the speaker while you're fighting stuff running about... that guy majorly annoyed the crap out of me.

Also... I am not exactly sure as to what defines a level in that game... your main ship is kind of a boring ship/level... though some of the random crap was funny I was kinda just not all that impressed. :-/

But, to each his own. :-)

Yeah man, the graphics kicked major ass.  Dunno what you're talking about.  Maybe if you played it at sub- 640x680, then yeah, but the Unreal II i played was very pretty (I really liked it how the water reflected the light.)

He's talking about not liking the content, not the visuals (from what I gather).

You need to adjust some settings on your graphics card if either of these are jaggy.  I belive Application mode on a nVidia card produces the sharpest quality, and I believe Radeon cards are similar (this card on this comp is a radeon, but im too lazy to check.)

Neither of these games are jaggy.  In the older version of Unreal (not the gold version), and "Advanced" mode was added, where you could choose to add true-curved surfaces, etc.  Makes it extremely pretty.  Do some experimenting.

Also, as for the glowing ammo, what would you expect from futuristic weapons?  We deserve to have our pretty glowing flashes and dazzling bolts!  Its what makes the modified engine really stand out!

Actually, both content and visuals.

Mostly the content was boring to me... but the visuals were just not very... stimulating either.  Even in the "smooth" mode it looked jaggy to me.... :-/  Of course, I play all my games on this old fuzzy-screened computer where as I did U2 at a friends house on a spankin' new LCD flat screen.

As for the shining bolts and stuff, I much rather prefer objects that have non-glowing characteristics, or have glow that's not so "look I am bright and flashy looking as I glow!" when they go by.

What I liked about Unreal was the variety of bullet, plasma, and rocketlike weapon types which all had unique uses (except that stupid shard-shooting gun... what a lame weapon that was... toough the shard idea was kinda neat.)

Anyway... as I said before; to each his own. ;-)
