Discussion: Violent Games
« on: October 8, 2003 09:46 pm CDT »
Everyone knows about the myriad groups out there trying to ban or bash games like Grand Theft Auto because of their content. Here are a few examples.

http://www.komotv.com/stories/27504.htm
http://www.almenconi.com/topics/games/grand_theft3.html

So, what do you think? Does playing violent games make children do violent things?

In my opinion I say no, unless the kid playing was already warped in the head which means, violent game or not, they probably still would do stupid crazy crap in their lifetime.

Oh great... not an other one of these terrible threads!

//sorry... just finally had thought I had found a board that was free of the "now playing", "violent video games" and "favorite movie" or "favorite tv show" type threads.  The 3drealms forum is packed full of that crap... and sorting through it to find the stuff that's actually interesting just isn't worth it any more.

//This is one of those topics that addresses a persons personal preference and personal idealisms and personal controls.  There is no right answer, but everyone will think they are right.  It's like a thread about abortion, or a thread about gun control.  It's never ending, and everyone ends up pissed off in the end.

//edited to add that yes I know the last sentence before this one is redundant, but I am using "never-ending" to mean a topic with no solution and "in the end" to mean, about the end of the actual thread and the people participating in it, ie; nobody feels good once it's over because they've just made a mess trying to say thet they're right, when nobody is nescessarliy correct.

The only violent game that I personally don't like is Postal 2.  That's just beyond my acceptable limits.  I mean seriously, you can mutilate remains, kick corpses, burn people (which turn black with red areas after burning), etc.

That's going too far in my opinion.  I'll never say that a game like Quake III or something is too violent though.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

The funny thing about the burned corpses; the females still have boobies, heh.  The fire is supposed to burn the fat off your body.  I can take Postal 2 no problem.  It's just the idiotic missions that you do and the general sense that you are in a little circle mindlessly killing people just for the hell of it.

Oh, and don't forget the "Flaming hole" gay bar...

Gotta love SBC with their 6Mbps tier for 45$
(Yes, on their site it only shows 3Mbps, but it is actually 6Mbps, I would know :)).

The point of a discussion is not to arrive at a conclusion. If a discussion makes you angry or annoyed, then you need to take some anger management. If you don't like a discussion, then just don't post in it. Complaining about it isn't going to make it go away, nor is it going to "clean up" the forums. Speaking of which, what would you rather us talk about? Owning General?

If you can't take part in a opinionated discussion with getting angry, you shouldn't be posting in this thread.

Would you consider physical torture bad for just teenagers or adults as well? It is possible for things to be unhealthy to all ages, you know.

Silv pwns people all the time.

I agree with Particle, I think it's ok to a certain extent..
But if I ever saw a kid under the age of 14 playing Postal2 then that would be just.. wrong. I mean, you can catch people on fire and then piss on them to put them out..

I think video game stores should have the people at the register using some common sense and common judgement. For instance keeping games like GTA Vice city and Postal2 out of younger kids hands.
