I need some help please...
« on: November 29, 2003 01:16 am CST »
Ok, I've had this problem for quite awhile and I've asked a few random people but nobody really gives me a straight answer because it's never happened to them. I finally decided to come here for hopefully some much needed help. Ok here's the deal.

My Internet Explorer will sometimes get tired of me browsing lol. I'll be going along fine and then it will sometimes send me to the wrong sites 'oops this page can't be found' pages, or the normal 'page cannot be found' page. Or I'll click on my home button and will take me to some sites i've never seen in my life, then other times will take me to my normal home page. If I delete my internet explorer and reinstall it it will work just fine for a little while and then start doing it again. I delete temp internet files often and use ad-aware and it'll behave for about a half hour or less and start it again. Does anyone have any idea at all what's causing it and how to fix it?

Also wanted to add when I click on valid addresses is when it does this to me and once i get the page cannot be found i have to close that whole window out and open another one because no matter what favorite i click on or what address I type in it will give me that page. It's not the long page cannot be found page it's the lil short one that has the address homepage of whatever main site i was trying to go to telling me it can't find the page. I hope I didn't confuse anyone but I don't know how else to explain it.  Thanks in advance :)

Gosh, even ad aware isnt doing it for you?  Thats very suprising.

Anyway, I would either try another browser (mozilla, opera, or netscape) or, better yet, format.

Check your process tree against a known list.  If you find anything nobody's ever herd of (use google and search for the name of the process) or is known spyware/adware/spamware, go ahead and kill it.  Then search for the file and delete it as well.

It sounds as if something is installed that is rerouting your web pages.  It may be timed or it may wait for when you try to visit another page and kick in their URL instead so as to get you to see their sponsors' pages.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Yes.. I've had many of those.. I've even had spyware/adware programs on my hardrive called "Microsoft frontpage 4.0". I'm like "Wtf".

It was annoying.. I had to go through my hardrive and delete programs/folders that I didn't recognize.. or that were new.

Thanks guys. Part, I've compared my processes with GE's one time and they all seemed like they were ok so not sure what else to try with that.

I do have a weather program open almost all the time Raz, could it really be that??

Ness, it's not porn popping up and I'm sorry to burst your bubble but I'm not a porn hopping teenager :P so you can forget that idea.

Dar...I so am not formatting lol.

You know, belkin had a router that would every now and then redirect you to a page they were advertising or something.  They got caught (read this on slashdot) and released firmware for it.

You can't msconfig in any os past ME.

Upgrade your computer Kenshin =)

Oh, and the problem is in your registry. If you are running XP, do a restore before it started happening. If you don't have XP, then you can either do what Darwin suggested, or live with it.

I think you got that backwards.  Msconfig works in 2k and XP.

I think not..

I always used it in 95, 98, ME.

Can't use it in 2k, XP.

I'm using 2k right now, and my brother has XP.

Oh, here
