Why is the murder rate in the US so high?
« on: December 1, 2003 06:11 pm CST »
Here's an interesting question. Why is the murder rate so high in the US, even compared to very smiliar countries in terms of culture (Canada, UK, etc.)? What is it about the United States that sparks so many gun-related deaths? What are your views?

(Do keep this at a somewhat civiled level, folks.)

Larger population = more murders?

depends on what part of the US you talk about silv.  in the southern part of the US, its more just because some guy slept with his girlfriend and she was too loose.  in the north, its just plain stupidity (ie-"Which way do you point this thing?").  as for the coasts, well, depends on which part of the coast and which coast in general.

The more murders/gun-related deaths is directly due to idiots breeding.  A shallow gene pool coming closer to a gene puddle with every offspring.

what newbie said.. the more people there are in a tighter place... the more crime

look at New York or even Toronto.. Toronto's crime rate is huge in comparison to cities with lower populations.. it's not the fact that there are so many people it's that there are so many people in a confined space

I don't agree. Japan has roughly the same population as the US, in a much tighter area. On average, the US has 11,000 gun-related deaths every year. How many does Japan have? About thirty or forty. Food for thought, eh?

they're a completely different race though.. thats like compairing apes to monkeys(that ones for you pecker... don't ask...)

I still belive that if the population of the united states was spread out alot more... there would be far less crime

also.. America surely has far more cultures than Japan.. differences in religon and colour .. granted other cultures do live in Japan... but it's nothing compared to the mix of races/beliefs in America

Also, Japan has more than one police officer on every block.  They dont even have to carry guns.

Completely different culture.  Plus a base religion that from the beginning taught peace.

Oh, and the stupidity goes here for the south too.  I remember this fat (really white) chick in Alabama, she was like:  I gotta wear my rags for mah folk.  (the folk is a gang in Alabama <they got an 8-mile area in Mobile, AL, seriously>)

As for the loose hick chicks, yeah, true, really depends where you look, but yeah.

Honestly i believe it depends what cultures live in a certain area. I'm not a racest, but blacks and whites will allways fight (not all of them). Catholics and protestants will allways fight (not all of them) Americas will never look at an Arab in the same way again (not all of them).

I think the biggest thing is that americans can buy guns allmost anywhere. Some BANK's are the biggest gun sellers. In canada it is way harder to get a gun, but it's possible (i fired a revolver in august in this country).

In ireland you can't buy guns anywhere, that is why they are shipped in in the boat full and sold for big money, but like anywhere if you know the right person you can get anything you want.

uhh.... First you ask about murder, then you ask about gun related deaths... which is it?  Muder or Gun Related Deaths?

You might want to take in to account that the number of murders or gun related deaths will vary from country to country due to other reasons such as;  Documentation or Classification practices involving the dissapearance of some one or the witness of their death.

Food for thought.

Indeed I was first going to post what darwin first posted, then what evil posted.  Then I read the part about gun related deaths and now it is diffucult to answer because first you asked about murders (which could be committed an innumerable number of ways) but then later in the post you specifically asked about gun related deaths.  So... to solve the question we will need to know the question first. ;-)

I know!
Its our culture!

Assuming the only reason for murder consist of either sex or money. (And they do)
-America was spawned from a war (Yes, I do believe its still matters)
-America has more movies/music/art/games that romanticize murder
-I believe as a society, we are more willing to do what we can to get what we want
-I think thanks to propaganda that we want morr, so we need to find more means of getting things
-Lack of patience.
-People think that they can get away with it/or the punishment isn't intimidating.
-And as eViL pointed out stupidity is a bigy.

Just the way I see it.

Why? Because guns are legal in the U.S., whereas many first world countries outlaw guns.

I dunno....in the 80's, U.S. population was only about 6% of that of the world. And used about 30% of it's energy.

Oh, and I thought this was kinda cool...http://http://opr.princeton.edu/popclock/. Of course, it's nothing more than a clock of seconds...
