I agree with Darwin.

It's the fastest drive on the market as far as seek time and rotational access times.  Also, it's smaller GB size allows all of the data to be accessed at more even and quicker intervals as needed.  It is the optimal disk drive as far as speed is concearned right now... and most affordable.

Alternately you could run an 8 disk SCSI RAID array with 4 pair of 250GB drives to achieve the same stability and speed as only 4 of these disks would offer, but at a HUUUGE price cost.

Over all I think that the drive darwin has pointed out is the most affordable tech gift that would be most appreciated for an every-day power user, However, if you were to run a file server, this drive would limit the storage capacity quite a bit.  What average power user runs a file server from their main computer any way?  Usually there's a box in the network with all the hugemongous drives of storage space and the file server is run from that, OR, they have connections.... Or an online space.

If you're after speed... this is quite a deal. :-D  (also has 8mb buffer on the drive, including the SATA 150 [actually around 133 in testing] MBs transfer speeds)

I already purchased 2 of them........ or I would have asked my bro's for one for christmas. :-D  (they already asked because they didn't know what to get me.  I already have all the games I have been looking for on e-bay, so I figured a couple spankin' new warhammer models would do fine.)

PEace.

120 gig Harddrives are quite relayable now-a-days, and quite fast too. Personally i believe a 30 gig HD would crash as much as a 120. People said that 30 gig HD's would crash too bad back in the day when they were used to 10 gig HD's.  I NEED a LOT of storage, and now that i have using cable i download a lot of stuff (Legal stuff ;))

Sure, the 120GB drives you are refering too are probably quick and reliable, but here are the key features of these drives which make them better than any eide drive on the market, and better than most SCSI drives on the market:

-smaller disk platter = quicker access time
-SATA 150 (tests show 133) MB per second = quicker access time
-Smaller drive space total = quicker access time
-10,000 RPM = faster access time
-8 MB cache buffer = faster and more stable transfer speeds.
-37.6BG = plenty of space to run a primary HD and OS installation.

The comment about the 4=8 for same speed and stability refered to the fact that 4 SATA 150 disks in a RAID of 0 + 1 will have an optimal stability level and higher speed than a SCSI RAID of 8 disks in the same RAID configuration (due to SCSI transfer speeds per channel, and how fast the PCI bus is, and how many SCSI controller cards you would need to have enough channels to make the speed the same.)

Sure, you will get much more storage from a 120GB or a 250GB drive, but it will cost a lot more, and be slower than this drive.  This drive has out performed all of the best SCSI devices out there, which says quite a bit at it's low 110$ price tag.

Here is a better solution;
Ask the tech if they want a storage device or a faster bootup.  Get them this drive for a faster bootup answer (provided that you also get then an SATA controller card or they already have SATA) or get them a much larger drive if they want storage.

Problem solved.

Ideal storage and backup suggestions:
Backup USB/Firewire: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 208&depa=1
Storage EIDE: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... =14&depa=1
Storage SATA:http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-148-017&catalog=14&depa=1

Any else have any suggested items?

If you'd delete all that kiddy porno you got on ur HDD it would probably free up a few gigabytes of space, Celtic.

*edit*
I got an ipod the other day (its under the tree).  It'll be my backup.

*edit again*
Are those heatsinks on the side of the HDD?

Small, fast drives make excellent boot drives.  Don't be deceived by a 36GB drive.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

It would be nice to get a 2gb solid state drive to boot off of.
