It would be nice to get a 2gb solid state drive to boot off of.

AHMEN!

I really got sad when my 1.2 GB boot drive got burned out 4 years a go.

It's becomming harder and harder to find small, fast boot drives these days; hence my interest in the SATA 150 10,000RPM Raptor :-D

If they put 2 GB hard drives back on the market, I would more than likely have 2 of those, rather than a 2GB primary partition and a gigantor extended partition... not to mention the fact that I could put the smaller drive in to my older computer (would have to be a 1.2 GB for dos drive right?  I forget their maximum size recognition) and fire up my cpu-speed regulated games.  (you know.... tetris clones, The Incredible Machine, etc... all run at the maximum speed your cpu runs... so fps is so fast you cannot see a single thing that goes on!  haha!)

I thought of an other good gift idea:
A good power supply upgrade!
Rumor has it that Fortron makes the best 400 Watt one out there.... but I have yet to test one out (they cost around 90$!), they're also at the best efficiency rating.

I am probably going to buy that myself too though. :-p

I looked at this expensive bugger: http://www.epinions.com/Simple_Tech_2_5 ... full_specs

Solid State Hard drive, but is 8mb/s good speed for a hard drive?  Seems kinda low.  Whats your input?

Well, a computer from 1991 would have had a hard drive with an ide-33 MB/s transfer rate.
;-)

I considered the solid state option, but bootups would take a looong time unless you were booting to DOS or a very very simple GUI OS.

I think 8 MB/s is kind of slow for a bootable option, though, a diskette drive is not even a quarter Megabyte per second.  Diskettes usually boot fine, as long as they are just booting up and then initializing an other drive with the OS you are running on that drive.

I don't acutally know if you could boot up using a flash drive as the boot device.  It would depend on your BIOS bootup capability, and I haven't seen one with that option yet.

Try it and let us know? :-D

Well I'd need a solid state drive with very fast transfer speed if I would hope to boot into XP within seconds.
