Intel Picking on Little Chips
« on: January 31, 2004 10:08 am CST »
Quote from my news:

Intel's Picking on Little Chips

In a not so surprising move by Intel, they are picking on the owner of http://www.intelrecon.com over use of the word "intel" in the domain.  Intel claims that "use of INTELRECON.COM and IntelRecon is likely to deceive and confuse consumers as to the source of your services and/or suggest some affiliation or relationship....that does not exist."  It's pretty apparent at first glance of http://www.intelrecon.com that they have nothing to do with Intel.  Intel (in the site's case) is referring to a common gaming and military term, short for intelligence.

Give the email a read

Once you've read the emails, give http://www.intelrecon.com a visit or talk about it in my forums.

Intel is (c) Intel Corporation (http://www.intel.com)

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

That is ridiculous. Intel's reasoning is that because their company name is Intel, any further use of that word is copyright infringement. Any consumer that actually assumes that IntelRecon is part of Intel would be summarily deterred in the first 0.2 seconds of viewing that site. If they're stupid enough to not realize that, it's their fault, not IntelRecon's.

I hate capitalism.

there was also something similar to that dealing with Blizzard's WarCraft series.  someone made a game or something and tititled it FreeCraft and they got shut down, and similarly someone using the Craft in the name would assume to be Blizzard's making as Intel belongs to Intel.

If thats true, then I can see why they wanted it shut down. But for something that obviously doesnt contain anything relevant to the larger corporation's product/service, they should just let it go.
Its like if Apple sued McDonald's for sellng a BigMac. (Or whichever came first.) But it is funny to think that Microsoft felt threatened by some kid's website.

I find it funny that Microsoft tried to get the kid to shut down his site when they wanted to send him a mere $10. He wanted something more like $10,000. It's all about the damn money. And it's his site, with a different URL. Microsoft, get lost.

I would rather take $10,000 over an xBox and the ability to get into a few microsoft shows.  you can do more with money than with objects :).

If somebody is wanting to go to microsoft.com and accidentally types mikerowesoft.com, there's a definate "double digiter" involved.
