If I was interested in breaking a bank account I would reccomend much different so far.  Of what I have suggested, only the "most expensive DDR RAM" and the GeForce FX 5950 are expensive.

Every thing has a cost, but I could easily have gone overboard and reccomended a crap load of stuff that costs way more...

Take my new setup for example...
New Motherboard:  200$ (before tax, free shipping)
New Gig of RAM:  200$ (")
2x New Raptor SATA 10,000 WD drives: 270$ (")
New Power Supply:  80$ (before tax, 10$ shipping)

It's insane... but I sacrificed the video card (for a temp, though malarkeyTY, video card, FX 5200... which I knew sucked, but I had no idea it sucked this badly) for the Motheboard, hard drives and RAM costs.  I figure in 3 months the 5950 should be easier priced. :-)

Anyway..
I reccomend you go with NVidia MSI cards.  They will have the best visual rendering quality over all cards for sale, THOUGH, you will sacrafice some FPS unless you have at least a 5900 FX series card.  I think it is worth it to have a better look myself, but I'm comming from a visual interest rather than just a game play speed interest. :-p

I reccomended Geil Golden for the reason that Particle posted.  The ram I have now cost me about 200$ before tax when I got it, now it is at least 25$ less, not to mention I purchased a GB worth, when most people only really need 512 MB.

Also... make sure that you get Dual Channel ram! :-p

actually Particle:
1 GB of GeIL Ultra Platinum is $180-$200
1GB GeIL Golden Dragon is $195 on the dot.

and the video card thing (relative price, not speed or features.):
5900XT = 9600XT

and FYI, if I was spending $400-$500 on a video card, I would bust my ass trying to find a 5800Ultra.  1000Mhz Memory Clock and 500Mhz Core Clock.  Asus made the best card from them though, the v9900... the card was discontinued a long while back though (both the 5800 Ultra and the v9900) which is why they are hard to find...

<-- Cheapass!
ChainTec makes a vidio card that uses NVidia Chips but does not cary the "NVidia" logo on the board.  WAY Cheaper with the same FPS, ect.
Its amazing what how far your money can go without the "Logo"'s on the boxes...

Is the only reason the 5800 not succeed because it doesnt have as many pipelines as the 9500/9700/9800?  Need more pipelines to use that bandwidth...

Hmmm... I don't know where you are getting  your faulty information... but this link to a chart may help clear that up:

http://www20.tomshardware.com/graphic/2 ... index.html

That is a link to the VGA chart for the current cards... it shows the numbers on everything, including pipes.

Of all of the cards, thes two are the theoretic best in for their price vs performance, and last I checked were hard to find.  Note the Ti doesn't support DX 9.0, just 8.1;
Code: [Select]
Card | Chip | DX Generation | Chipclock | Memoryclock | Buswidth | Pipes
GeForce FX 5800 U | NVIDIA NV30 | DX 9 | 500 | 1000 | 128-bit | 8x1
GeForce FX 5800 | NVIDIA NV30 | DX 9 | 400 | 800 | 128-bit | 8x1
---the budget card is the next line---
GeForce4 Ti 4600-8x | NVIDIA NV25 | DX 8.1 | 300 | 650 | 128-bit | 4x2
If for some reason there is a hate towards NVidia, then there is the ATI option set, with the 9700 Pro being hard to find last I checked;
Code: [Select]
Radeon 9800 XT ATI R360 DX 9 412 730 256-bit 8x1
Radeon 9700 Pro ATI R300 DX 9 325 620 256-bit 8x1
---the budget card is the next line---
Radeon 9500 Pro ATI R300 DX 9 275 540 128-bit 8x1

However, the best over all performance in visual quality appears to be the GeForce FX 5950 U.  -good luck affording that one!

It's really up to you, your budget, and if you are most interested in FPS or in Visual Detail.  The 5950 seems to solve all of these problems except for the budget problem.  I myself would go with the 5800 U or the 5800.

Peace, and check out the link to the CHARTS for full details.

I love newegg very much.  But I'm gonna have to turn away from them when I buy my 9700 or 9800, due to the 9% sales tax they now charge for TN.

Yuo failed to note that I said "last I checked" in every relation to the 9700 as well.  Last I checked (which was 4 weeks a go) newegg, googlegear, and some other store were not selling them.  I suggested to newegg in their little suggestion box form thing that they should start selling them, and apparently they did.

Anyway... I'd rather have the 5800 U myself ;)

Best value for the price:
Sapphire 9800 Pro for 210$ from NewEgg.

As for the whole Raptor HD thing, I'd rather RAID two 80GB Maxtor's than spend that much for a 10K rpm drive that has 36GB for nearly the same price.

Lidge, I know you love your Nvidia company, we all did.  Give ATi a shot, I fell in love with ATi when I bought my 9700 Pro (at the time, the Ti4600 was crap in comparison, however nowadays the 9800XT and 5950U are almost the same).
You want hard to find? Try to find an un-opened 9500 Pro.

Also, read more review sites other than Tomshardware. You'll be suprised what a totally un-biased site may show you on their benchmarks.

Gotta love SBC with their 6Mbps tier for 45$
(Yes, on their site it only shows 3Mbps, but it is actually 6Mbps, I would know :)).

Just for your information:
I don't love Nvidia.  I disliked them greatly (and still do to an extent) because they forked over 3dFX with the same tactics ATI is now using.  I don't appreciate being delegated a stance towards a company based on information I have found or tested.

If you read all of the THG guides and reviews you will note just one article with one paragraph that says anything about the visual detail difference between the two cards.  This paragraph is accompanied by 2 comparrison screen shots with the latest ATI drivers (of that time, November or December... I have forgotten) and the latest Nvidia Drivers.  The screenshots (as well as home performed tests) showed that the Nvidia Divers did not drop any details at all at the highest (and half of highest) card output while the ATI drivers clearly did.

All of the rest of the THG reviews are mostly biased toward ATI in that they address computational scores, FPS, and price, but not the Visual detail at maximum (or even partial) output.

I confirmed this with my POS 5200 vs the 7500 and though the 5200 is a total piece of crap and is slow as crap, it still output higher visual details than the 7500, BOTH cards running with their respective optimized drivers and at the same (800x600) screen resolution.

Anyway...  Up until recently I would have reccomended an ATI card; cheaper, more effective, less buggy.

BUT, the current NVidia cards (the good ones) function at a comprable level of FPS and computational detail while maintaining a higher detail level (not dropping overlay and dynamic rendering effects in game) where the ATI drivers clearly have.
