One thing I miss is the task manager ala NT-based OSes.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

I had a thought process about OS's in the last few years and it developed in to kind of what yo are suggesting, OZ.

My idea was to have an OS that was more modular... or "plugin" oriented.

Example;
Modular OS -boots computer, has configurable settings, etc...
-Win98se Module.  -When you install Win98se from the windows disk, you do so by going to your modular OS installer and selecting the "install new OS module" option, which then asks where the install CD/Drive/File is located, and you point to it.  The Modular OS then installs the Win98se OS as something kind of like a DOS box in windows, but with Full-Screen options, and the ability to use an outside command to switch from wind98se back to modular OS, or a command you can execute (alt f something) to close wind98se with no complaints at all.

Of course... that leans hard towards emulation as far as I know... though I have never taken up the thought of making an OS.

In a sense, Modular OS would be the MAIN OS.  From this OS you would launch other OS's and their file structure organizers as if they were other programs running... and then inside those OS's you do the same to run actual programs.....

It reminds me of the old days when you would Boot up DOS, type in win.exe, then open KingsQuest 5.
--Essentially this is the same type of model:
OS>OS>Program.

It's not ideal unless it can really work... but we all know how overmindish the windows OS's can be.  Doh!

I guess I kind of rambled here... but I hope it helps in some strange twist of the word. :-)

When an OS is executed, it completely takes control of your hardware, and any other process you could think of. With this being said, having more than one OS loaded at the same time if it didn't crash your system would be catastrophic.

If you are talking about not having any OS loaded, and then executing from some type of menu ect, then that isn't possible.. After all, you only have access to such a menu when an OS has already been loaded to RAM.

The only way that would solve said problem is to emulate the OS.. This is what I intend to be doing.. Emulating every version of windows with Linux still having the last say in what goes on. This way, every pice of software would be supported. Now with the complete emulation on top of the power of Linux, I don't see a single person who wouldn't want such a powerful beast.

I mean.. This on top of any other fixes that could be made to Linux; I just don't see a reason to use any other OS for any reason.

This is what I am trying to accomplish. I'm not saying it is going to be simple or easy, but at least it will make billy-boy sweat quite a bit.
