Linux Distro

What would you like to see in a linux distro that you haven't seen before? If you don't know what I'm talking about, then don't post.

A windows game emulator that works! ;-)

Well... I don't know exactly... I don't use linux, primarily becuase I don't yet see the support for certain things that I like to do... like play oold DOS games, Windows95 games (earthsiege 2) and use older graphics and editing utilities.  It's not so much that the current distributions don't work for things that people need, it's that the things I use are "specialized" uses that not many people probably care about any more (especially with a lot of good linux programs out there.)

Of course... the dream distribution would emulate all of the positive aspects of windows uses with out the negative aspects, and would also emulate windows95/88/ME faster than the actual windows programs went, and have a command line imbedded in the "start bar" which would run and open stuff in to DOS boxes that were emulated EXACTLY like DOS works... so that all the "testy" computer programs would work with the sound drivers properly.
;-)  That's kind of wishful thinking though eh?

Still, you should satisfy the cutting edge if you want Linux to take a hold in the world... right?  That and a little bit of the last 5 years... a lot of small busineses still rely on windows98se to run their programs.

Peace and goodluck!
:-)

Id like to see easier installation of programs.  Lindows with their click and run and Suse with their YaST file thing has made this easier, but they arent able to make everything a snap.

Look.  It took me like... 5 hours to get limewire installed and running when I first tried linux.  In fact, it was the only thing I could get running.  A newbie cant look at these guides and completely understand whats going on!

I would like to see voice commands integrated into a linux distro.

I agree with what darwin said. It would be nice to see more program compatability.  I could never get my webcam installed. I even had a linux friendly version and I tried and tried and couldnt get the damn thing installed. It's far too complicated to install programs.....

Better management software, specifically for hardware.  I installed Mandrake 9.2 once and it showed my huge RAID-5 as being formatted in ext2--which about made me puke.  That's where I had everything stored at and it should have shown NTFS.  I'd like to see controls that can be relied on and show windowsesqe detail.  On another Mandrake 9.2 machine, I witnessed the control panel disappear.  It just poof--left.

Greater reliability.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

Well, my initial idea was to make a distro that is completely compatable with both windows and linux base applications and system software. Calling it Unisys.

I had the idea where I would do the opposite of what WINE does.. The OS itself would have a mini registry, and drectories would be based off of windows. In this way, there wouldn't be any trouble using windows applications. On the other end, linux software that is getting installed doesn't require any specifics on directories ect.

After reading these things, I think there could be a bit more involved too..

Part, try using RedHat or Suse. They should have no problem detecting the RAID properly.

Most likely Part.. Linux is written in C, so it isn't like it is a completely new language to us.

I'm thinking of starting with Debian and modifying it from there.

Oh and Dark, if you do a search on google, you can find millions of matches..

You know, many people choose linux to get away from microsoft-compatible applications...

I would just like an easier to learn distro.  The average newbie has no clue about how to compile a program in a console.

I probably wouldnt be saying this if I had somebody just to show me how to do it (in person).

I'll be in linux forums asking "how do I install this?"  They'll go something like "OK get into root"....

Windows really spoils you...

Yes Darwin, but there is one major problem..

Some people perfer certain software.. Most of the time this certain software is required to run on windows, and WINE isn't good enough to make it work.

If I could run Steam, Jeskola Buzz, and Photoshop in linux, I wouldn't even have windows installed.. This is where the problem lies..

Not to mention the things you mentioned and many other linux users have mentioned to make it easier.

For instance, Unisys will probably have autoplay for CD/DVD's. Something that I miss in linux. I know it is easy to mount a drive, but the fact is that it can be a pain. I also look at this to be a gateway OS.. For instance, There may in the future be two different versions.. The version for the windows user to convert.. And the version for the linux user who just needs more system/software support.

If you wanna make the distro without trouble from M$, I kinda recommend you first remove their logo from your logo.
