An answer long awaited
« on: April 20, 2004 10:14 pm CDT »
I was talking to one of my college professors tonight about making an app to auto reset a game server when the console locks up.

This guy actually has a doctorate degree in CIT.

Anyway.. I brushed up the topic to him lightly feeling embarassed about mentioning that it was for a game many years old.

He then asked me exactly what game I was talking about. I proceded to tell him it was Tribes.

To my supprise, he is actually a Tribes freak. He has been playing Tribes since the beta testing days, and actually played professionally in a clan called TekRats.

With his knowledge of computers/networks and his knowledge of  Tribes, he knows every single possible bug in the game and how to fix it.

Among these is the famous console lockup.

He explained to me that Tribes was written for older computers, and on newer computers the computer works much faster than the game possibly can causing 90% of all Tribes complications.

He wrote an app to start a server and eliminate most of these problems. Which to my supprise is very true.

He said that the only way to truly get rid of the console locking up is to completely restart the server once every 24 hours. He had also written an app to automatically do this.

Among these, he told me a large secret. He told me how to set up a 32 player server without any lag on a Road Runner cable connection with at least a k6 500mhz with at least 768mb of ram.

This really shocked me..

In fact, I am going to throw my 733 P3 box together and try it.

I just figured I would share this with you guys. Yes I do have the apps he wrote too =)

Why does the no lag thing have to be such a huge secret?  Why cant it be released for the good of the whole tribes community?

The secret is....

A network card... Realtek 8130

And the server packets set just right. This depends on your connection and will be different for everyone.

not really, I gave most of my tribes stuff to a friend and it is really up to him if he wants to take the time to sort through all the misc programs and mods.  I have pretty well givin up on tribes, except for on a last mod I am trying to make... new RPG with complete reworking of the gui's and many other things.

I am waiting for WoW :).

Dude!  TekRats! ! !  I think they had a shifter server!

Cool. :-)

Maybe we could all coelate our information to a website so it's better accessible and usable?

If I get sent enough crap, I'll add it to the website I'm buying in the next few months.  (depends on a few things)

Anyway... good news!

Its actually very depressing..

I know now that some things are possible that none of us could ever imagine..

It is possible to keep terrain from repeating.
It is possible to animate an atmosphere.
It is possible to completely retexture the game in a much higher quality.

It is just that it is too late now...

You goofball :-p
We've known about that stuff for years, but nobody has been kind enough to show us how to do any of it... or point me to a tutorial.  If I ever asked, no matter how polite and adult I have been, my question was met with "you aren't leet if you don't know it" or "figure it out" or "I figured it out, but I can't remember how I did it" type answers.

Actually... there were a few guys out there who were re-texturing the Tribes game completely though I don't know what happened to them, and an other group that had re-textured the terrain with Tribes2 terrain tiles in their full colorful glory.  (I think that was posted here allready)

There was a server I used to play on that would cycle the sky textures as the "sun went down" for Acrophobia... and I think UB&G RPG used to do the same with a day/night thing, but that allowed the duplication of inventory items as a negative side effect.

Anyway, I think it's totally awesome that you know how to do this stuff now (or know a source that can show us how) and if it is late of not to you or I doesn't seem to matter; there is a new tribes mod every week still!
:-D

Well I'm still pumped to help out with upping a nice looking website and hosting all this stuff!
:-)

I think I may even be able to set up FTP account access for people involved in the note and file submissions.

Also... this reminds me about "Ozzy Goes Hardcore"... did that get finished or was it abandoned?  Modding takes so much time usually... I just never get past making the preliminary .div's or textures... then I get side tracked and forget to finish.

Talk to me man!!!  We need to get this going! :-D

But I'm sure many people would start to play.. or start playing again if you were to make a new kick-ass mod wit stuff like that.
