My Weekend Disaster.
« on: April 26, 2004 09:04 am CDT »
K, I live with my girlfriend at her dads house. and he WAS using an old p2 450 with 64 megs of ram on a dial up connection. Things started to go really badly for the computer as the internet temp file had 17,450 files in it and deleting it would be allmost impossible. So my girlfriends dad ask me can i fix it....I say yes..BIG MISTAKE. I open the BIOS to check the settings in there and the i go into Proformance....I see i can overclock the CPU, so i put it up about 100 mhz and restart the computer. When i turned the computer back on the moniter wouldn't display. *poops self*

To cut a long story short he realised that his computer isn't getting fixed anytime soon so he goes out and buys a brand new p4 2.6mhz with an 80 gig HD and 256 megs of DDR ram. cost well over $1200.

Man i felt stupid.

Rule #1 Don't ever work on another person's computer again..

Rule #2 You could at least helped them get a newer one for much cheaper than that.

I just bought an Abit nf7-s motherboard, 512 RAM, an AMD 3000/400 Athalon xp processor,  an AMD BH-625 RT 1 CPU Fan, and a Power powmax  400w powersupply for about $370.  Why would you ever spend 1200 on a pre built computer when you can build a damn near top of the line computer for less than 800.

You destroyed his original computer and still can't figure out why he didn't go to you for help in buying a new one?

rofl... pwned

WolfTones, you didn't need to play with the damn BIOS in order to clear the internet cache. You should have deleted the files. It may have taken a day to do so at that clock freq, but it's genius compared to the idiocy in which you approached the problem. I'd NEVER increase my processor speed without doing some research.

Hey man you should have just pulled the cmos battery out and popped it back in.  That restarts all the bios settings.  Its worth a shot as I see it just as long as you didnt damage it too bad.

Yes i know this, and don't think i didn't try it. But i tryed everything. I took the battery out, i took the MB jumpers out, i tryed EVERYTHING to get this thing working again. THEN i took the ram out and started it up, No warning sound. This means the board is as good as dead. The only thing i didn't try was a POST card cause I didn't take mine with me when i moved to this country.
