I am about to purchase and install a modchip on my Xbox to run Xbox linux.  I have no experience in this, and I was wondering If any of you have attempted this, and If you have, please lend any advice.

I am having a friend's dad install the modchip, so I'm not worried about that, but I am going to make my own USB connecter to use a keyboard and mouse.

What I have to get is: A Breakaway Extension Cable(xbox) and a USB A female to USB B female cable thingy.

Im just wondering if any of you can lend your advice before I jump into this.  I have no experience in soldering, but I think my grandfather does.

If I am successful, I will be able to run Linux Mandrake 9 on my xbox!

Well, as you may know, I HATE CONSOLES.

But, if there is anything about wire splicing/ random computer questions, I am your man.  Ask away...

Do I just pull back the insulation on the two wires, bring the colors (of the wires) together, then touch them with a soldering iron?

no no no, first off this is what you need :
Wire Stripper (you don't buy them @ strip clubs)
Electrical Tape

Then, simply pull back the wire about half an inch, depending on the gauge of the wire. If the wire seems pretty big, may need to go a bit further back.

Then, twist the wires a bit with your thumb and pointer fingers. And after that, pbut the two side by side and twist them together like you did for the individual ones.

And to finish it off, wrap electric tape around your masterpiece. If you want a fancier job, you can use caps(local hardware store).

You are right about the USB modems, i want to get an ethernet modem, im just too busy (really!)

If I make good grades, i get an Alienware laptop for christmas.

Thanks dude. Twisting the wires should be much easier than soldering them together, though i dont think I would have that much trouble with it. I have a wire stripper.

Do you think I can pick up that USB cable thingy and the Extension cable for xbox at compusa or best buy?

Im pretty sure I have some electrical tape left over from when my grandfather made me a train set when I was in kindergarten (Its freaking huge!).  I dont think there is a job he cannot accomplish.  Hell, he turned a part of the attic into a guest room with skylights in less than a day.

Well, that extension is supposed to connect to a controller, so when u pull the controller too hard, it comes out instead of pulling your console out of your entertainment center and falling on a babies head.

You know what, Id probably save money If i just didnt buy the USB Hub and just got two extention cables and had them fill up 2 controller slots.  Wonder how much USB keyboards run for...

Im putting myself in a whirlwind of confusion now  :P
