Sound Trouble
« on: May 21, 2004 11:20 pm CDT »
Last week I was using a Sound Blaster Live! card in order to use digital output speakers.  I had to remove it today, so I am using integrated audio on regular compatable speakers.  Sounds works, but somehow everything echos.  Can somebody tell me how to stop the echo effect?  All my music sounds like it is live in concert.  Here is what is in my device manager in the field of audio:

Open up your case.

Find the audio codec.

Stab the heck out of it with a phillips.

Go buy a better sound card.

;-p

Seriously... I have seen and heard more bad malarkey with onboard audio codecs than I think they are worth.  I just always transplant one of my old sound balster Live! cards over to the new machine. :-)

Uninstall all of the audio devices. Go into your CMOS, and disable your onboard audio. Restart your computer and go back into your CMOS. Turn your onboard audio back on. Boot up to Windows, and reinstall the drivers.

Thanks UG, that worked perfectly.

Only trouble I had was with Jack-Sense (makes sense, doesnt it?).  Jack Sense is this useless but integrated program in Gigabyte mobos that detects that you plugged speakers in!  Crazy, huh.

Thats ok.. I have worked on a couple compaqs that would literally talk to you when you turned on the computer..

When it passed the POST it would say "Hello"
When it began loading Windows it would say "Starting up your computer"
Right before it would turn off it would say "Goodbye"

This was all comming through the PC speaker which by the time I was done I had unpluged it from the motherboard.

I forgot to plug it in before I gave it back to the guy, but the result was rather funny.

Him: "Hey man, you got rid of those annoying sounds! I couldn't stand them anymore"

I normally just stick screws to the back of my PC speaker's magnetic back (I always have more screws than I began with when working on my computer).  Its quite a strong force.

My advice would be to get them the hell out of there as soon as you can, if they touch the mobo in the wrong place things could go badly wrong.

aww... I was hoping you would ignore the lgoical solution and use my solution first. :-p

I was thinking you had the auto-detect jack becauseo f how you described the problem... but I am a jerk so I didn't tell you how to fix it.  The problem will come back... eventually... have fun! ;-)

Then I'll get me a $10 card, lidge

That screw has already caused a few problems, but I dont care.  I just tilt it back the other direction, and the laptop will start back up.
