Need to Nigerian Rig This
« on: June 1, 2004 04:23 pm CDT »
http://www.pcrpg.org/pics/peltierexp/

This is the beginning of my peltier experiment.  Only one catch...I have no idea how to make this thing turn on without a real case and power button.  I need a way to rig this sucker up to run without anything more than bent paperclips and jumper cables.  That folder contains pictures of what I've got to work with...this PSU is an oddball and I can't remember AT systems very well apparently or I'd know how to make it power up.

Motherboard: Acer V58XA-2N
PSU:  AcBel API-6023

I've got the power cables in correctly (black against black) and the switch on the PSU is set to 115v.  Both items are assumed to be in good working condition.  Mobo/RAM/CPU is a pull unit and the PSU was band new and does emit power (tested with an LED).  I don't know how to kick the thing into full gear and power the mobo is all.  (Some leads are permahot)

Ding, Jumper cables.
Completion of circuit on jumper (At-conn). Adds Fire to board.
There should be a pin-out for that board you can use.

I can't follow you.  There is no jumper labeled "At-conn" or anything close.  None of the printed values on the board match it either.  There's a power switch jumper, but I've shorted that before with no luck.

What do you mean by pin-out?

all of the AT power supplies i've ever used had a black cable with the power switch on the end, meant to be screwed to the front of the case with the power button. i can't see one on that power supply o_O

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.  It's a strange PSU.

Well, he did say a peltier experiment.  Since you are stupid, I'll tell you.  He's finding an alternative cooling solution for his computer.

P4 2.4ghz @ 3.2ghz.  Air cooling with stock cooler.  Lapping the HS and AS5 really do a good job.

You must have a really cold room.  It would have to be under 70 degrees...since air cooling can't get below ambient.

Cooling + Case Options:  Is this cool stuff or what.
Yes, this seems like an odd board.  I would get an ATX board and your problem is solved, LOL!

One of the best normal cooling methods would be as eViL and I have discussed is a carbon fiber case.

Carbon fiber is the material used for high-endurance car parts. It does one spectacular job at cooling. If you do happen to make one make sure you ground it well so you don't get lit up.

Actually I thought about that one time. I  got a quote for a
36"x15" of 1/16" carbon filter sheet metal for the back of the side and top sheet and a 14.5"x7 sheet for the back, it was going to cose around $120, with machning. The case I have now was $12 off EBay ($76 retail)
Its a good idea, but it costs too much to be practical.

Hersh

Edit: Now that I'm thinking about it, http://http://brockmetals.com/index.html may be a cheaper alternative.

Darwin, did I say I knew what peltier means? Buzz off.
I could use a cooling system like all of those u got. Right now, my case is open on both sides and ive got a window fan propped up to cool it. How much are all those......accessory items?

i can make carbon fiber cases with a huge discount.  my uncle steve owns a carbon fiber shop in hood river, he makes everything from the drive shafts for the subaru rally cars to the space shuttle camera mounts.  he has let me use his shop in the past and i am actually going to be getting an internship with him.

as ozzy said, if you ever use carbon fiber as a case, ground it in more than 1 place (ie - wherever there is a screw touching the carbon fiber :)
