I can explain it, it's pretty easy. I figured it out on my own, so I'm sure if I point you in the right direction you'll get it easily.
First, depending on what kind of animation you want to do, you create the extra layers.
If you want to make the whole name flash once, then all you do is duplicate the text layer (right click in the layer palette) and make one normal and the other 'lit up' with the color you want. Then, you go to file-->jump to-->image ready
When you do that, another program opens up with a little slide box in it and its on your original picture. All you do is, click the eyeball thing in the layer palette to hide your original so the colored one is showing, and add a slide (click the little arrow on the right side of the slide palette). Then, you just go to file-->save optimised-->save it like normal (it should be in .gif)
To do it like xanths, you have to duplicate the text layer for each letter. In each duplicate, you color the letters from beginning to end. What this means is, in the first layer have it the normal color. In the 2nd one (we will say the word is 4 letters long), you make the first letter the color you want. In the 3rd layer, you make the first 2 letters the color you want, and in the 4th, the first 3 letters.. so on and so forth. Then, in image ready, you just click the eyeball things on the layer palette and add slides in the order you want the animation to go. Now, before you save optimised, you have to do what is called a tween. That means, you highlight 2 layers and add in extra slides. You do this in between the first 2 slides, and then you do it with the next 2, and so on until you are done. This gives you the smooth glowing effect, and not a choppy animation.
If you can't figure it out from this, I can help you on AIM.
