The Athlon symbols.. they are Particle's replacement to the dull stars or whatever the crap we had.  They indicate your level of your total posts basically.

....... actually... they're AMD symbols.

I don't think the Athlon has a specific symbol that I can recall.

So do all who see such times, but its not up for them to decide. All you have to decide is what to do with the time you have.

Some that live deserve death, some that die deserve life, but can you give it to them?

I believe we had this discussion before, so I'll only briefly restate my stance (made up of a few points):

1)  I spent $96 a year ago for a chip that can beat a 3GHz P4 according to my own testing.  The 3GHz chip still sells for over 2x that price.  Point #1, performance vs. value.  AMD wins.

2)  Heat from AMD CPUs isn't really an issue.  It takes a $15 heatsink to cool them.  Think AMDs make more heat?  The hottest AMD CPU is the just released Opteron x50 model.  It has a thermal load of 89W.  The hottest Intel CPU is the P4EE 3.4GHz CPU.  It has a thermal load of 102.9W.  Compare the AMD Athlon XP 2500+ to a 2.4GHz P4.  66W vs 53W.  The AMDs just don't run as hot as people think.  Heat--no winner (it's pretty close on mainstream chips).

3)  You'd have to be talented to bust an AMD chip.  About the only way you could break it is by hitting it with something or forcing it to run without a cooling device.

For me, right now, I'm sticking with AMD.  You can get a $110 chip to clock 2.5GHz+ on air cooling.  Not only that, but if you're worried about heat, you can get a mobile version that runs on less than 50W.  A 2600+ mobile chip uses only 45 watts and is the same as the desktop chip, only capable of running its speed at a lower voltage.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

I agree with some of that Particle, and You're right, They are cheaper chips. But I have had some bad experiences with them. My  mind was made up when I seen a whole tray order of them die RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS! I was building ALL the PC's that left our store. What was I suposed to do when I had no chips to build a computer with? All because of them.  I'm not just an AMD basher, because I believe that Intel needs to come down in price, and perhaps it would be better if their chips were put together a little better, but when you get on in your computer, it's going to be in ther for a very long time without any problems. I know to many people that hate AMD because their chip blew up!  But i guess you can buy 2 AMD chips for the price of 1 Intel lol.  I don't think there is a right answer for the question "what is the best chip, AMD or Intel".

Or you can bust out the extra $5 and get yourself an Athlon XP Mobile 2500+ 35W version.  So it runs even cooler than the 45W XP Mobile 2600+.  :)

No, there really isn't a best.  There's just a preference, and AMD happens to be mine.   8)

I know, but I've heard the 2600 clocks higher

Well said, But would it be fair to say this:

AMD=Gamer CPU
INTEL=PROFESSIONALS CPU

it's the other way around.  the intel p4 has more frount-side bus bandwith for faster commucating with the RAM and such.  p4 is much more suited for high-end gaming.  correct me if i'm wrong, amd doesnt have any hyper-threading chips, do they?
