Gnight, you still use Windows 98 and you just updated your IE to 6.0 less than a week ago. Your computer is < 1 GHz if db is to be believed. Why are you even worried about P4s? lol

it's the other way around.  the intel p4 has more frount-side bus bandwith for faster commucating with the RAM and such.  p4 is much more suited for high-end gaming.  correct me if i'm wrong, amd doesnt have any hyper-threading chips, do they?

You are wrong, the A64's are using a form of hyper-threading to achieve their 1600MHz FSB.

As Ozzy has pointed out to me before, the FSB doesn't mean jack once it is over 400Mhz because that is all memory supports unless you OC the memory with the FSB.

AMD's are more suited for gaming due to their extremely good L1 cache usage... which is where Intel flops the big one.  When it comes to L2... it is the exact opposite.  But depending on the game, Intel may have a slight advantage due to an instructional set in the chip.

So neither is better than the other, it all depends on your pocketbook and your overall use of the processor.

yeah good point evil. Speaking of FSB. IBM is uo to 800 mhz FSB now I believe.

So thier is prob goona be alot of people wasting thier money on a motherboard that has a 800mhz FSB

There is only one way to get around the big question of what chip to buy, invent a Duel motherboard that uses AMD and INTEL TOGETHER! Man i'm going to make a LOT of money :D

I know to many people that hate AMD because their chip blew up!

Lol, yeah, well thats a good point, but generally, the reason they blow up is because of the builder.  Many newbies to the computer building world go out and buy a cheap amd chip, and decide to build their first computer with it.  They attach the processor to the mother board, and on they go with life, only to find that the chip fried the near instant they turned the computer on.  They get angry, and decide to go buy a pentium chip.  The only difference is this... they probably got somebody to put the pentium chip in the computer for them, as the pentium chips are more expensive (you have more to lose).

Lol, this happened to my sister's boyfriend.  He screwed the damn motherboard right onto the case.  Fried like a fish.

But, in any case... you take the chip back and get a new one... that's what warranty is for.

--Edit-- The AMD 64 bit chips outperform the Pentium 64 bit chips... and they are cheaper... can't go wrong there, if you want a 64 bit machine =] --Edit--

Why would you want a motherboard that handles 2 completely different sets of instructions?

gnight, you are totally wrong.

AMD is better for the hardcore gamer. It can be easily overclocked, it is durable as hell, and easily knocks p4s away with the set of instructions.

P4 is better for a coder/web designer. Someone who is going to need to use a LOT of memory between different applications quickly. If you are the person who wants to have 6 different instant messengers open, 3 different irc connections open, 3 different word documents open, and still be able to run a lower end game decently, p4 is for you.

I believe we had this discussion before, so I'll only briefly restate my stance (made up of a few points):

1)  I spent $96 a year ago for a chip that can beat a 3GHz P4 according to my own testing.  The 3GHz chip still sells for over 2x that price.  Point #1, performance vs. value.  AMD wins.

2)  Heat from AMD CPUs isn't really an issue.  It takes a $15 heatsink to cool them.  Think AMDs make more heat?  The hottest AMD CPU is the just released Opteron x50 model.  It has a thermal load of 89W.  The hottest Intel CPU is the P4EE 3.4GHz CPU.  It has a thermal load of 102.9W.  Compare the AMD Athlon XP 2500+ to a 2.4GHz P4.  66W vs 53W.  The AMDs just don't run as hot as people think.  Heat--no winner (it's pretty close on mainstream chips).

3)  You'd have to be talented to bust an AMD chip.  About the only way you could break it is by hitting it with something or forcing it to run without a cooling device.

For me, right now, I'm sticking with AMD.  You can get a $110 chip to clock 2.5GHz+ on air cooling.  Not only that, but if you're worried about heat, you can get a mobile version that runs on less than 50W.  A 2600+ mobile chip uses only 45 watts and is the same as the desktop chip, only capable of running its speed at a lower voltage.

Que Everything he just said, expect from me...
