Your character can also get blackscreened if you try to use special characters in your #setinfo. I ruined 3 characters before I realized that was the culprit.

You can be whatever you want.. ranger or bard would be a good choice in my opinion, but it's up to you.  Don't even think about bashing if you are a mage, though.

Same thing happened to Achromatos, but Particle fixed it when all those ppl were getting hacked by Peach.
