Lag every 2 minutes in tribes..
« on: June 23, 2004 09:46 pm CDT »
I'm here at the beach, and they have wireless internet (wireless linksys router) which is on DSL.  For some reason, in tribes, I lag for about 3 seconds every 2 minutes.  It's not the end of the world, but it is extremely annoying.  Anyone ever had this problem and found a way to fix it?  I already tried setting myself as the DMZ host, and tried forwading the port of the server..  no dice.

Is this only in tribes?

I began to experience this same problem first in tribes (my main game at the time), then in other games.  I first thought it was my connection, but later discovered it was my faulty hard drive.

My home network is on a wireless Linksys, my mom'ss computer, across the wall from mine, seems to work fine, it will get 94% conncetion, but my dad's is on the opposite side of the house, and usually connects around 47%, he complains its not much faster than dial-up.
So maybe moving closer to the router, if possible, will help. (Which, I know defeats most of the purpose of it being Wireless, but hey, no more drilling holes in the ceiling.)

This post, by its very length, defends itself against the risk of being read.

Wireless is great for using the internet, but not playing games. You drop too many packets.

Well it's actually all in the same room, we just didn't want to have to deal with the wires.  The 2 laptops we take all over the condo, but the 2 desktops are in the same room as the router (probably no more than 15 feet away).  I think it's just a wireless issue, and I don't really know a lot about wireless, althought I did try several things that didn't work.  I figure if DMZ doesn't fix it, then it's not really something that has to do with the router settings.

I've heard from a lot of people that wireless routers lag in games.

Look at your compression and your Encryption.
If you have high encrypt you are passing packets that must be decrypted before they can be passed over the internet.  In games where there is a high ammount of packets this can cause lag.
I prefer to use the device id listing option.  That way the WAP only accepts device id's on the list.
Good luck.

Oh, well crap, there goes my theory, sorry :(
Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that is a Linksys would it?
You dont have the packet rate set lower than 11mb for a 802.11b or 44 for a 802.11g do you?
If you look up some of the issues there are problems with the Linksys having to "Re-link" all the time to re-esablish there connections.
