Yeah I think im gonna wait till Saturady and watch him do it. That way I will know for future reference. Plus I need to go buy some artic silver thermal paste. Claims are using this alone can drop temp by 2c.

You both suck.
If i = 0, and the condition is "i>0", then it will never enter the loop in the first place.

for(int i=0;i<1;i--)
  System.out.print("Nub");

Expect an even greater difference between the stock thermal material and arctic silver 5.

Put 100% load on the computer and heat the sink up nice and good, take the sucker off.  Scrape the thermal material off the heatsink while its still warm (comes off much easier like that).

Rub some rubbing alcohol on it.  *edit*  (The heatsink, Lidge.)

Get some steel wool (my favorite) or some fine grit sandpaper, and smooth the sucker out to a fine finish (use water with sandpaper if you decide to use that) *edit* (I'm also talking about the heatsink, Lidge).  Be sure to use something to blow the small metal grit out of the heatsink (like compressed air... or a hairdryer...) if you use steel wool.

Then rub it down with more rubbing alcohol.

Then follow these instructions on putting AS5 on it: http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silv ... ctions.htm

well we dont need to reseat after all. I got 2 Thermaltake fans that have 74cfm and put them in the back of machine and put the 2 coolermaster fans in the fron to blow towards the back. I achieved a idle Temp. at 40C degrees on the Processor and when i played unreal it only went to 45C. Still may do the reseat but not this weekend. Great fans and God they push a ton of air --but a bit on the loud side. Good thing i wear headphones when I play so no big deal!!!

Taking it off, cleaning it, and replacing the thermal material.

Now I need some advice.  Should I replace the thermal material between certain periods of time?  Such as a year?

I would not follow the suggestion of Darwin if it is a modern AMD.  Modern AMD have the top of the processor exposed directly to the thermal paste/grease which is then exposed to the heatsink.

It would be unwize to sand the top of the die on such a processor.

I wouldn't put alcohol on it either... this can reduce the over all life span if it gets in the wrong place.

Do you have money to buy a new processor if you mess this one up?

Definatly DO clean the heatsink and chip while warm though; best results.

Darwin, if I were in to using greases like you do (hehehe) then I would indeed clean and renew the grease once a year (though with an AMD I would try to avoid a grease as they can be harder to clean once they harden to a point.

ALSO... LESS IS MORE!  The thermal paste is not as good at transferring and dispersing heat as the heatsink.

You should only put enough paste or grease on the chip to fill in the neerly microscopic scratches and gaps that normally occur in the surface of a heatsink or pentium die cover.

Peace.

Not the Athlon 64...  it has a heatspreader.

There is no mention of sanding down the core in my post nor in the Arctic Silver tutorial that was also posted.  Read the steps carefully, it says to skip some steps, Lidge.

Actually the infinite loop is set up like this...

for(int x=0, x<0, x++)

or

for(int x=0, x>0. x--)

Then this could easily be added.

printf("Owned");
