Intermittent Freezes (old + newly formatted computer)

alrighty, I bought a "new" computer from a thrift store recently.

400 something mhz, 256 ram, some 35 gig HD.

It had been reformatted recently, with Windows 98 on it, so its clean as a whistle.

The problem is is that, for no reason, it temporarily freezes (im still able to move the mouse around for around 3 seconds) for around 5 seconds every minute or so.  When i say no reason, i mean it doesnt occur just when i open a new program, access a web site, or anything in particular.  It does the freeze no matter what i am doing or what is running.

The only processes running are Systray and Explorer.


Anyone have any ideas as to why this happens?

A driver conflict Maybe. Try starting in safe mode. (press f8 when booting, then select safe mode.)

If you boot in safe mode and it still doesn't work, it is most likely 1 of 2 problems:

Bad hard drive.  If this is the case, you can buy a new one for really cheap and "acquire" a windows 2000 professional CD.

Bad RAM.  If this is the case, you are in luck, because you can buy more than you need for like $75 (seeing as how its 400 mhz, 512 will be an easy buy on eBay, or you could check out pricewatch.com)

If it's a bad hard drive, just buy like a 20gig or something, which won't even dent your wallet.  Regardless, it sounds like you have some sort of hardware problem since even a clean harddrive doesn't fix the problem.
