DooM III (in 10 days)
« on: July 24, 2004 10:40 pm CDT »
Hmmm,

So an old classic is on our doorsteps again, modernized with all the latest and greatest in technological make-up.

Whom here is going to purchase DooM III; consider this the "official DooM III Discussion area". ;-)

Anyways, I can't wait to try the co-op mode as the first thing with surround sound going late-at-night with some other newbies to singleplayer.

Well... I hate to be a terrible critic... but I didn't think that doom or doom2 were really very interesting past the first few levels/episodes.  I did play them both, and I did have fun with the sharewares, and the wolfenstein levels (and some of the other more creative levels) but in the end I was kind of overall disappointed with doom/doom2.  I can't really explain why... maybe because I played wolfenstein much more... maybe it's because I went from wolfenstein to Duke3d, to Hexen, the Quake, to Doom/doom2.  I did play with the doom2 deu level editor and the dehacked wad editor... that was the most fun I ever had modifying a game, but the game itself was pretty... boring.

I voted "what's doom" because I really never understood how much fun killing the same 3 (12 total?) enemies over and over on a flat-3d level system (even though it did have pits and elevators... I like to jump if there are ledges damnit!) was supposed to be much fun after about 7-10 levels of it.  Manchibus did kick ass though. (I think I spelled it wrong)

That... and I was very very good at those kinds of games back when I played them all the time.  I did beat doom shareware on Nightmare with out too much trouble.  I also beat the first 3 levels of doom2 on nightmare before I lost interest.  It was a lot of fun... but only in small doses.

Quake, on the other hand, was much more fun... I think the level design improovement may have been why.  Hexen as well... very interesting levels, switches, puzzles... even if it did have the same 2-3 basic badguys in EVERY level.  Also.. I could jump over stuff and hide from enemy fire... much more fun than the old strafe method of gameplay... to me anyway.

Enough about that...  I'll see when it comes out, just like you will.  Then I think we could make the proper judgement for it.

Hey,

Oh yes I definitely see your logic, it was one of those things where it only geared to a certain niche of gamers perhaps. Like I can understand that DooM was a first-in-its class (so to speak); the first wide-spread use of a fake-3D simulation with sprites (there was others like Blakestone and Catacombs etc.) and that lots were geared to it, but not "everyone". I guess running through the same hellish maze can add-up quickly, but for someone like me it was new coming from Commander Keen, Biomenace, and Raptor at the time. Different effect for me :-D. But yours is completely viable in its out right as well.

Your right, the later games you mentioned had a lot more to offer, but they were more up on the chronological ladder and technological one. But for sure; Quake, Hexen and Duke 3D passed DooM for what it had to give out. Hands down.

I guess we'll have to just find out if this classic can be breathed new life for a new round and generation of gamers that never got to see the revolutionary aspects of the first DooM's. (depending on how you look at it)

PS: glad you mentioned what you did, puts things more into perspective on all sides

I played DooM and DooM2 all the way through..  I actually played Duke Nukem first, and that was a fun game.  That was back when I had AOL, and one of my neighbor friends had it as well, and we used the telephone connect method and played co-op together, which I doubt a lot of people did..  that is probably what spawned my multiplayer game addiction.

After that, I played through DooM and DooM2, and enjoyed those to a certain degree, but as Lidge said, I just got bored after playing a few levels in a row.  I'm sure DooM3's graphics will be simply amazing, as any returning old game, but unless they change the way the levels/monsters are set up (which I'm sure they will), I probably won't enjoy it.

As mentioned before, I can't really judge a game I have never played, so my judgement is totally based on the previous titles.

Hello!  I am one of those few!  Amazing! :-D

We played duke3d, descent, descent2, and Hexen (hexen lan only) together.  It was awesome!
:-)

Once I modified some of the weapons in Doom2 I did play it most of the way through... I got all the way to the strung-up commander keen level before I actually stopped playing, but that was on hard (whatever they called the hard skill level) rather than the nightmare as before.

We made a version of the douoble-barrelled shotgun we called the "lawnmower gun" which essentialy was the double-barrel with 2 frames; 1 firing, 1 reload.  So, you could shoot it at about 100 rounds per second... of course we also made the bullet puffs turn in to cyber-demons... and all of the lamps were invincible and would chase you down if you weren't looking at them AND they would blow up like barrels once they got close enough (you still had to be looking away though.)  Play through doom2 that way... ;-)  (the lawnmower had unlimited ammo)  Also the plasma spawned spider-demons I think... but I cannot remember if that's the case for certain when I played through.

Oh yeah... and also I had the grand idea of changing the stimpak to say "picked up and asswipe" instead of "picked up a stimpak" because we never really thought they were even worth picking up.

OOOOhhh, the best mod we did was where the enemies, when exploded, would continue to go through the explosion death frames of all of the explodable badguys (and as barrels) and then they would die as everything else, then they would come back to life, an be invincible, and their shotgun bullet puffs would spawn more of their kind...... yes, we took "nightmare" one step further with that one.  The best part of this was that it also played the sounds of the enemies getting splattered every timeand also the sounds of them dying... so there was a TON of screaming, splattering guts sounds, and enemy breathing.

bullet puffs=where bullets hit walls and make that puff mark.

..look at me ramble! :-p

I think Doom/Doom2 was fun once we got editing... but the standard game was kind of boring for more than 3 levels at a time.
:-)

Not only was that a TOS violation, but it's wrong to suggest that somebody try an illegal incomplete version.  Wait for the demo, try Doom at somebody's house, or buy the damn game and chance it being bad.

As a point of history:  Our last server clear was on September 27, 2004.  That is 4963 days ago (13.6 years) as of today.

If you're visiting after a long hiatus and have forgotten your password, try emailing me via the support form at http://www.pcrpg.org.

If your character is from after the 2004 clear but appears to have been deleted or reset, chances are it was caught in one of the inactive account purges over the years.  Backups were made before such events, so try the support form.

I hope this is legal to say, if not, edit it out particle, But i have downloaded the Halflife 2 warez verson, But then i just deleted it right after the download finished, Half life and Doom have been in the works for YEARS as everyone knows, To download and play the game before it was intended was an insult to the hard work and many hours that went into making the game, I quickly deleted the game from my harddrive. Half life 2 was ment to be play ONLY when it is complete, it's going to be worth the wait, as will doom. I will GLADLY Pay money to buy half life 2, If the game sucks, then at least I have shown respect to the makers of the game for trying....But i have 100 Confidence that half life 2 will live up to the hype...CMON ITS HALF LIFE :D
